Starting in the 2025–26 school year, California Education Code Section 53008 requires that all students in grades K–2 are screened each year for risk of reading difficulties. In SFUSD, Grade 1 & 2 students will be screened for reading difficulties using Amira October 1-24.
Next Steps for Grade 1&2 Teachers:
- Set up your HMH Ed classes and confirm Amira is enabled (look for a ✔ next to Amira). [Video: How to set up Amira]
- Review the administration instructions for the Amira Reading Difficulties Screener.
- Prepare: You may use Amira from Sept 8–24 to collect beginning-of-year information (see lessons for getting started). Note: This does not replace the required Oct 1–24 screening, which includes all screener items.
- Check the Comprehensive Reading Difficulties Screener Report in DnA to view and analyze important data regarding grade 1&2 students before screening (includes date of parent notification, ELPAC scores, historical data etc.).
- Register to attend a required Reading Screening PD on October 8. Choose one session: 2:00–3:00 or 3:15–4:15
