Principal's Welcome Letter

Dear George Washington High School Families and Community, Espanol 中国人

Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year!  We hope that this letter finds you healthy and safe. We are very happy to be able to welcome you back with renewed excitement and joy, and continue to connect and care for the entire GWHS community. We will continue to strive to provide a quality learning experience and needed support that each and every student at Washington High School deserves.

Welcome to the Class of 2026! Our mission at Washington High School is to provide opportunities for students to become lifelong learners who think critically, and strive to reach their full potential while maintaining mental and physical health.  Our goal is that all Washington High School students will grow to be resilient, productive, and contributing members of their communities. As your Principal, I understand that our mission cannot be achieved without the support and collaboration of our families and community.

Please read the following important information:

Health and Safety

Masks are strongly recommended indoors, but are not required. We will have masks available at the lobby if needed. The protocol for when a student or staff is positive for COVID remains the same as last year: Call the COVID-19 Support Line at 415-660-9850 or email covidreporting@sfusd.edu for return instructions. We will be receiving rapid test kits around August 22nd and will distribute them to all students through their advisory classes once received.  Please continue to self screen and stay home if you have any symptoms. 

Eating in class: No food and no open containers are allowed in the classroom during instructional time unless expressly permitted/allowed by the teacher.  All food and open beverage containers must be disposed of before the bell rings.

For now, we recommend you begin working back into a wakeup routine, check SFMTA routes and stock up on your favorite facemasks! For the health and safety of everyone in our community, it is strongly encouraged that all eligible folks receive a vaccination.

 

The first day of school is Wednesday, August 17th. There is no special schedule. All students will begin in 2nd period and follow the Wednesday schedule. Below you will find important information to ensure a smooth start to the school year.

Class Schedules: Student schedules will be officially available to view next week on August 16th for our  9th grade and August 17th for all other grades.   Academic counselors will be available next week as well and can be emailed for academic/class related questions. 

9th Grade Orientation and any new to Wash students: This event will happen on Tuesday, August 16th from 9:00am-11:30am in the football stadium so please dress accordingly for the weather.  Here is the agenda:

Dropoff/Pickup: It is strongly encouraged for students to be dropped off at one of the four corners: 30th/Balboa, 30th/Balboa-Geary or 32nd/Balboa-Geary, and walk to the front stairs by Anza or the back gate by Anza.  The front stairs and back gate of the school by Anza is for student crossing at crosswalks and buses. 

Academics: Teachers will engage students in assessment, provide feedback to families, and assign grades via StudentVUE and ParentVUE. Here is the SFUSD student and family handbook:

Lockers: All students will be assigned a locker in their homeroom by their homeroom teacher.

Partnership:  Partnership begins in the classroom. Our school’s Coordinated Care Team will collaborate with the student, teachers, and family to identify supports, reduce barriers, and continue to develop innovative ways to ensure student learning.

Information Forms: All of the forms that we have used/mailed to you historically, including Free and Reduced Lunch Forms, are available in ParentVUE.  Make sure to sign up for ParentVUE: Activate my Family Portal. The tools and resources that you need are available in this portal. 

Apply online for School Meal Benefits (even if you don’t qualify for free/reduced mails!):

The Multipurpose Family Income form for the 22-23 school year is available online at sfusd.edu/MFIF. The form is available in English, Arabic, Chinese, Spanish, Tagalog and Vietnamese. Although breakfast and lunch will continue to be free for all students, families must submit a new application each school year to qualify for benefits such as application fee and test waivers. As your Principal, it is important to me that everyone who steps through our doors-  teachers, students, families and community members - feel safe (emotionally and physically), welcomed and valued.  It is truly a privilege to be part of a community where families, students, faculty, and staff care for each other and strive to build positive relationships that support academic and social growth.
