APTOS APPLAUDS

Aptos applauds Maylina Baltodano, “Ms. May” for her dedication to our school as one of our security aides. Maylina knows that as one of the first adults the students see when they start their school day, it is essential to smile and say “Good Morning” to each student. Teachers know that when a student needs support, "Ms. May" is the one to call. Students feel comfortable expressing themselves with Ms May, and she approaches each conversation with a restorative practice lens. As the mother of an SFUSD student, Maylina interacts with families with a personal lens - showing up with warmth and understanding, sharing her knowledge, and connecting them with the person they need. Maylina is also in her second year as a leader in the Paraeducator Leadership Network where she is developing professional development for her fellow paraeducators in the district. Thank you Ms. May! We are so lucky to have you at Aptos!

Anyone wishing to try out for an Aptos sports team must create an account on Home Campus, and also get the pre Participation Physical Form filled out by a doctor. Note, this is a different form from the old Parent Consent form used on the hardcopy physicals we used in the past. Click for a handout, or for a video with instructions/ more detail. I appreciate your patience in the roll out of this new system in the middle of the schoolyear, and if you have any questions or need assistance, please email Coach Haas at haasg1@sfusd.edu.

This is a youth centered festival organized by Teacher Librarians, Public Librarians, educators and artists. It is a free event for youth bridging the activism of the Bay Area with the fandom of comics, anime, and pop culture. The event will feature zine-making, a drawing jam, a cosplay parade, exhibitor booths, and workshops facilitated by local artists and activists.  Students also have the opportunity to host a workshop to teach something they know how to do to other youth or exhibit their artwork and sell it. Here is the website from a previous event (Feb 2020), so you get an idea of what this event is and the types of workshops.  The festival will be in person, and masks will be mandatory indoors.

Would you like to sell or be an exhibitor?
Please fill out this google form ASAP (by 11:59 pm Sunday, October 2) to show you are interested in being an exhibitor, selling your art, zine or comics, and this link if you want to lead a workshop or panel. There is a stipend of $100 to lead a 45-minute workshop or panel.

If they want their story to be performed, they must turn their story in by Friday Oct 7th. The orchestra and performing arts classes and the writers will collaborate together to present on October 28th a presentation of the scary stories to our students in 3 assemblies. Families are invited.

Boys Soccer: The boys fought hard all season long, going undefeated, and showing their commitment with early morning practices daily. Unfortunately, they were knocked out of the playoffs in the first round.

Boys Baseball: The team consisted of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders this year. Overall, the team did well and made it all the way to the playoffs! They play again on Friday in the semi-finals.

Girls Softball: The girls had an up and down season, with some great wins and tough losses. For many players, this was their first time playing softball, and they showed their grit by showing up ready to play daily! Their season also ended prematurely, with a loss in the first round of the playoffs.

Volleyball Coach needed: Paid Position! The season lasts for approximately 8-10 weeks (depending if the team makes the playoffs), from early December to the end of February. Please contact Coach Haas (haasg1@sfusd.edu) directly if you, or someone you know, would be interested in filling this position. See this link for the job description.

Aptos Tigers PTSA Newsletter- September 2022 Edition

This is your monthly recap of events, volunteer opportunities, and a summary of upcoming events.

We held a teacher appreciation lunch the day before school to show our support for the year ahead. The lunch was a hit with Toloski’s famous potato salad, Sarah’s scrumptious fruit salad, donated delicious desserts, and a piñata to knock this year out of the park!

While the students, staff, and teachers returned to the classroom, parents enjoyed some coffee and breakfast snacks in the yard on the first day back to school. We provided classroom assignment assistance and welcome packets to families.

The 8th Annual Pizza and Ice Cream Social was held last Friday and had a great turnout. We started in the cafeteria and moved to the lower yard due to the fire alarm going off. Our swag and membership team pivoted and were able to continue services on the lower yard. Big thanks to the Membership and Hospitality Team! Luckily, all the pizza and ice cream were saved (and eaten), and the alarm was turned off without incident.

These events and future events wouldn’t be possible without the support of our fellow parent/guardians.

We have a list of volunteer opportunities with some key positions available on the School Site Council and PTSA Executive Board:

  • SSC – Parent Members
  • PTSA Board – Vice President and Co-Vice President
  • PTSA Board – Historian and Parliamentarian

We have some ongoing programs which are also in need of volunteers.

  • Yard Monitors – (Beginning late Sept) Help support the teachers and students with yard and hallway monitors.
  • D7 Grant Coordinator – Help to execute the action items for the grant funds. Grant has already been awarded.
  • Events Coordinator – Help with completing tasks for events during the school year.
  • Outdoor space Coordinator – Work with D7 grant coordinator to plant trees and plant in the raised planter beds.
  • Lunch Clubs Coordinator – Work with staff and CYC to help with lunch clubs.
  • Cultural Programs Coordinator – Help prepare items and special performances for cultural celebrations.
  • Nurture and Nourish Program – Donate food, tea, or coffee K cups to the teachers’ lounge.
  • Teacher/Staff Liaison – Help complete the Teacher Photo wall, maintain supplies in the Tiger Lair, and support providing volunteers for teacher requests.

There is an opportunity for every interest and your time is greatly appreciated! Please message me for more information or to volunteer for a position. We are a volunteer organization and need your support to maintain this great community.

Upcoming Events:

Monday- September 5th- No school – Labor Day

Friday, September 9th – Picture Day
