There are two types of work days that can take place on school grounds. All garden maintenance days must take place during non-school hours. 

  1. Informal Garden Maintenance Day: When maintenance (weeding, watering, planting annuals in EXISTING GSY areas) is needed on your site, an informal group of school community members may conduct maintenance on the site without obtaining a permit as long as they obtain the Principal’s approval AND all participants sign annual waivers which should be collected and stored in a binder.  Please check with your Site Administrator/Principal to be sure no other events or construction are taking place on site when you plan to be there.

  2. Formal Garden Maintenance Day: If an entity (PTA, Non-profit,Community Organization, business, etc.) is hosting a formal maintenance day or event on your school site (weeding, watering, planting annuals in EXISTING GSY areas)  the entity must obtain an approved Facilities Use Permit (FUP) from SFUSD’s Real Estate Office & provide the required insurances.  The entity may apply for multiple work days in one FUP. The fees associated with FUPs may be waived if a staff person (principal, teacher) at your school is participating & willing to open & close up the site. All participants must sign annual waivers which should be collected and stored in a binder on the site.
