Update

Dear Francisco Community:

I am writing to share an update regarding the incident that occurred at our school today in which a student was injured. As we previously shared, a student was injured in a stabbing and was taken to the hospital. We are very glad that the student is going to be okay. Out of respect for the student’s privacy, we cannot share additional details.

While there was never an active threat to the school community and no other students or staff were injured, in an abundance of caution we placed the school in a brief lockout, which means the perimeter of the school was secured and school activities continued inside. The police immediately responded and are investigating.

Occurrences of weapons on campus are rare. We have several security measures in place at schools. Most importantly, the very best school security measures are when a school creates an environment where all adults are alert to potential threats and students feel safe reporting concerns to adults.

As you know, bringing a weapon to school results in serious consequences. More information about our school’s policies can be found in the SFUSD Student and Family Handbook

I understand that this is a truly difficult time for everyone and an incident such as this can cause us to experience a variety of emotions including stress, anxiety, fear, and sadness. It is stressful any time violence touches us.

On Monday, March 20, we will have additional mental health supports in place and available for students and staff.  Teachers will lead activities to help students process the feelings that are surfacing.  On Monday, March 20t we will also host an in-person community meeting at Francisco from 5 - 6 p.m.

If you or your student (child) need any support we, and our staff, are here to help. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me or any member of the administrative team if you have additional questions, or simply want to talk. We are so fortunate to be a part of such a compassionate and caring community, and we are here to support each and everyone of you.

In community,
Principal Liz Fierst
