SFUSD will open Mission Bay Elementary School in August 2026, providing neighborhood school capacity in one of the city’s fastest growing areas.

The new school is integral to rapid housing plans along San Francisco’s East Side, where families now residing in SoMa, Mission Bay, and the Potrero Hill neighborhood face some of the steepest competition in the city for seats intended for neighborhood residents.

The construction of Mission Bay Elementary School was made possible by Proposition A, passed by voters in 2016, and a Board of Education Resolution that initiated the planning process.

Construction at the school is scheduled to be completed by January 2026.

Important Key Dates:

  • Oct. 2025: Enrollment for PreKindergarten through Kindergarten begins
  • Aug. 2026: Welcoming the school’s first students

Grades:

  • For the 2026-27 school year, the school will offer the following grades:
    • Pre-Kindergarten (General Education)
    • Transitional Kindergarten (General Education)
    • Combined TK-Kindergarten (Special Education)
    • Kindergarten (General Education)
  • Mission Bay Elementary is planned to grow into a full TK-5 school with Preschool by 2032.

Enrollment:

  • Families can apply to Transitional Kindergarten (TK) or Kindergarten at Mission Bay in the 2026-27 enrollment cycle; the Main Round application opens on Oct. 17, 2025 at sfusd.edu/apply. For PreKindergarten, learn more about how to apply.
  • Mission Bay Elementary School will become an Attendance Area school, sharing the Daniel Webster Attendance Area.
  • The opening of Mission Bay Elementary will provide more TK General Education (GE) seats in 2026-27 for San Francisco families overall.
  • All students in the attendance area will qualify for the attendance area tiebreaker at Daniel Webster Elementary School and the new Mission Bay Elementary School.
  • The neighborhood overall will see a threefold increase in GE seats with minimal impact on other schools. There will be more school capacity overall in the neighborhood, and more General Education attendance area seats.
