Announcement Message

Dear SFUSD Community:

We are aware of a planned day of action that asks students to participate in a walkout on Friday afternoon. This action relates to recent immigration developments in Minnesota. All SFUSD schools will be open. While SFUSD supports our students in speaking up about issues of importance to them, student safety is our top priority. Likewise, free speech is a protected right and something our school district takes seriously. This message contains important information to help families, students, and staff understand district expectations, student rights, and safety procedures.

First, I want to acknowledge the national climate and the fear and uncertainty many immigrant families may be experiencing. Please know this: SFUSD remains unwavering in our commitment to every student we serve. Every student deserves a safe, welcoming environment and a high-quality education, including our immigrant students. We are proud to serve them, we value the richness they bring to our school communities, and we are truly glad they are here.

Our schools will continue to prioritize student safety, belonging, and well-being. We stand with all of our students and families, and we will continue to do everything within our role as educators to ensure our schools remain places of care, learning, and opportunity for every child.

Please keep reading this message for important information about what to expect during a student walkout.

Student Safety and Campus Procedures

Once students arrive on campus, they may not leave during the school day unless they are signed out by an approved adult listed on the emergency card, and the school’s early pick-up protocols are followed. Verbal permission from a parent or guardian is not sufficient; only written notice or an in-person signature is accepted.

If a student leaves campus without authorization, staff are required to notify school administration immediately and follow protocols for unexcused absences and parent/guardian notification.

Middle and High School Students – Off-Campus Protests

Middle and high school students have the right to participate in an off-campus protest and will receive an excused absence, provided they notify the school in advance, in accordance with district policy and state law. (CA EDUC 48205(a)(12)).  Generally, one full-day excused absence for participation in a civic or political event is permitted per school year, with additional excused absences at the discretion of a school administrator.

If students walk out without obtaining prior authorization or giving advance notice, parents will be contacted through the usual absence notification process. Families are encouraged to discuss plans with their children in advance of Friday and to establish clear expectations regarding attendance and arrangements.

Staff Role and Supervision

District employees may not organize, promote, endorse, encourage, or lead students in a walkout. Walkouts are not authorized field trips at any grade level. Staff are also not permitted to engage in political activity while supervising students.

If the school administration determines that student safety requires supervision during a walkout, the principal will consult with the assistant superintendent for their division to determine whether staff may accompany students in a supervisory, non-participatory role only.

Staff who wish to be absent on Friday may use personal leave and must follow normal substitute request procedures.

Student Speech and Behavior Expectations

Students, you have the right to express yourself at school. At the same time, your words or actions should not violate school rules or disrupt learning. Speech or behavior that is bullying, threatening, harassing, or hate speech will not be tolerated. Anything that seriously disrupts school activities is also not okay. If staff observe bullying or harassment, they will intervene when it is safe to do so.

Our priority is the safety, well-being, and dignity of all students and staff. We appreciate your partnership and cooperation as we navigate this situation together.

In community,

Dr. Su
