April is SFUSD Pride month. For over 35 years SFUSD has been honoring the identities and history of the LGBTQ+ community and recommitting ourselves to our shared value that everyone derives to feel like they belong! This year’s theme is: Freedom to Be: Art, Joy, and Resilience!
On April 21st we’ll be holding our third-annual Superintendent’s Read Aloud will be Jimmy’s Rhythm & Blues: The Extraordinary Life of James Baldwin, by Michelle Meadows. In 2025 James Baldwin would have turned 100. This beautifully illustrated book will deepen students’ understanding of his contributions to both the worlds of literature and civil rights, which will be reinforced through fun extended learning activities while developing their reading comprehension and critical thinking skills.
SFUSD’s Pink Wave is also on April 21st! Inspired by Pink Shirt Day, this anti-bullying initiative is to help make sure all of us feel free to be ourselves.
All Middle and High School Students are welcome to attend our city-wide Youth Pride celebration, April 22nd.
For a schedule of LGBTQ+ Pride activities and celebration ideas, check out SFUSD’s Pride Month Resource Guide.
Looking to support your school community or the LGBTQ+ person in your life? Here’s some things you can do: Ask your school’s administration to request a PD from LGBTQ+ Student Services to go over best practices and introduce inclusive materials. Check-out our new Parents and Caregivers of LGBTQ+ Youth Support Guide.
Happy Pride!
