Hello CAC Community -

Much has happened since our last update and CAC members have been busy advocating, learning and working hard to support students with disabilities. Read below to learn about how the federal changes will potentially be impacting our schools and our community and how you can take action.

On Monday, November 10th, Dr. Su and other district leaders will be meeting with the CAC for a Budget Town Hall focused on Special Education. We hope you can join us for this special event taking place from 6-7pm on Zoom. (Register Today!)

At our October CAC meeting we welcomed our new Head of Special Education, Jenny Jimenez Payne. She comes to us with a wealth of experience and passion for Special Education. She has only been on the job a few weeks but we already have hiring fairs scheduled to address our staffing vacancies and she's deep in discussion with district and special education leaders to improve processes and practices on behalf of our students.

CAC & AAPAC Joint November Meeting- A Community Cafe on Significant Disproportionality

Presented by the CAC and AAPAC

Date & Time: Thursday, November 20, 2025 from 5:30-7:30pm

Location: In-person at Leola Havard, 1360 Oakdale Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94124

A Community Cafe on Significant Disproportionality

Community members will participate in an interactive learning experience focused on understanding significant disproportionality in special education and discipline, and discuss the implementation of systems change in SFUSD. This meeting will be held in person.

SFUSD Budget Town Halls

Dr. Maria Su will host several town halls in October and November 2025 to engage in SFUSD’s budget development process for the 2026-27. This is an opportunity to come together as a community to discuss what’s important to our families, staff, students, and community supporters.

Schedule:

• Thursday, Oct. 30, 6 p.m.–7:30 p.m. — Mission High School

• Saturday, Nov. 1, 11 a.m.–12:30 p.m. — Francis Scott Key Elementary School

• Monday, Nov. 3, 6 p.m.–7:30 p.m. — Burton High School

• Saturday, Nov. 8, 1 p.m.–2:30 p.m. — Marina Middle School

• Monday, Nov. 10 6:00-7:00pm- VIRTUAL CAC Town Hall (registration information above)

Please RSVP if you plan to attend. Spanish, Cantonese, and ASL interpretation will be available. If you would like to request additional languages for interpretation, please note that in the RSVP form at least 72 hours in advance of the town hall you will be attending.

PURPOSE OF THE CAC Link to this section

The purpose of the Community Advisory Committee (CAC) for Special Education is to champion effective special education programs and services and advise the Board of Education on priorities in the Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA).

The State Education Code mandates that each SELPA have a CAC and that a majority of CAC members are parents of students with disabilities. 

Joining the CAC gives community members an opportunity to have their opinions heard and make a difference in the way special education is conducted in our area. Find out more on the CAC membership page.
