#MLK Strong Week

MLK school policy is that everyone in the school community uses language that is supportive of ALL students so that all students feel safe, included and ready to learn.  Recently, we have noticed many examples of students using hurtful language.  In addition to responding to individual incidents, we are launching MLK Strong Week between 4/10-4/14.  

On Wednesday during this week, students will participate in homeroom lessons & community circles supporting inclusion and will be invited to take an anti-bullying pledge.  Students will also complete a service learning project. The date of the service learning project will be on Wednesday 04/12. 6th graders will be doing community service at Cayuga park, 7th graders will be on campus and 8th graders will be at Crocker Amazon park. Please have your students wear comfortable walking shoes and clothing that can get dirty.  If you are interested in joining us on our day of service, please fill out the following form: https://forms.gle/r2ZUU1KWJDw7J3AY9. 

What can you do to support MLK Strong Week?

  • Talk to your students about whether they feel welcomed, accepted, valued and included at the school.  If they are having challenges, please reach out to our school counselor Clifton Szeto (szetoc1@sfusd.edu), social worker Terra Gauthier (gauthiert@sfusd.edu), Student Advisor Cesar Flores ( floresc1@sfusd.edu) or restorative practices coordinator Jennifer Founds (foundsj@sfusd.edu).  
  • Talk to your students about what they are doing to support the inclusion of others.  Ask them to use language that supports others and doesn’t put people down.  Remind students that even “jokes” can have a harmful impact.
  • Review the SFUSD Student and Family Handbook 7.5-7.7 with your student

#MLK Semana de Fortaleza

La política de la escuela MLK es que todos en la comunidad escolar usen un lenguaje que apoye a TODOS los estudiantes para que todos los estudiantes se sientan seguros, incluidos y listos para aprender. Recientemente, hemos notado muchos ejemplos de estudiantes que usan lenguaje hiriente. Además de responder a incidentes individuales, estamos lanzando la Semana de Fortaleza de MLK entre el 10/4 y el 14/4.

Durante esta semana, los estudiantes participarán en lecciones de aula y círculos comunitarios que apoyan la inclusión y serán invitados a hacer un compromiso contra el acoso escolar. Los estudiantes también completarán un proyecto de aprendizaje de servicio.La fecha del proyecto de aprendizaje servicio será el miércoles 12/04.
