Advisory Teacher will call you by phone to introduce themselves and get to know your family and child better. The purpose of this conversation is to establish a partnership between you and the school to make your child as successful as possible during their time at MLK Middle School. Phone Pouch Reminder
MLK MS is a phone free school. Phones and earbuds must be locked in the Yondr pouch. There will be regular “pouch checks” in Advisory. Phones are earbuds not in pouches will be confiscated and held at student support for the student’s family to pick up.

Recordatorio de funda para teléfono
MLK MS es una escuela sin teléfono. Los teléfonos y auriculares deben guardarse bajo llave en la bolsa de Yondr. Habrá "controles de bolsa" regulares en la clase principal. 08/14: MLK MS: 1st Day of School Tomorrow, 6th Grade and New Families Orientation, Phone Policy
1st Day of School:
The 1st day of School is tomorrow August 16, 2023 at 9:30AM. 6th Grade Students and Families, please report to the Cafeteria. 7th and 8th Grade students, please report to your Advisory Room.
Student Schedules:
Students Schedules are now posted on StudentVue and ParentVue. Please ask your child to login and see where your Advisory Room is. If you are unable to see your schedule, please go to Room 102 tomorrow morning.
6th Grade and New to MLK Transfer Orientation:
Families are invited to attend 6th Grade Orientation assembly for all 6th grade students and their families on the first day of school. 6th grade students and their parents/guardians should report to the cafeteria at 9:30am on 8/16 for the assembly, which will conclude at 10:30am.
Yondr Phone Pouch:
Starting on the first day of school, students will be required to keep their phones secured and locked in the Yondr phone pouch. 6th graders will receive their pouch at the 6th grade orientation meeting on the first day of school. Returning 7th and 8th graders are required to bring their phone pouch with them. There will be regular “pouch checks” in Advisory. Any 7th and 8th graders that do not have a pouch on the first day of school will be issued a one-time replacement.
Our phone policy is aligned with SFUSD’s cell phone policy, and is enforced with the academic and social-emotional wellbeing of our students in mind.
Parents/guardians and students that need to make contact with each other during the school day can use our school phone lines. To contact our main office, parents/guardians can call 415-330-1500.

MLK MS: Principal's Welcome Letter 2023
Dear MLK Families,
I hope this letter finds you happy, rested, and feeling ready to welcome our students back to school!
I am excited to share some wonderful new developments at MLK Middle School. First of all, I’d like to introduce myself as MLK’s new Principal! I have worked with MLK as the Assistant Principal for the past five years, and I’m looking forward to supporting our amazing MLK students, families, and staff.
MLK now has a new seven period school day. The seven period day allows ALL students to experience a variety of rigorous, high-interest electives, which will be offered throughout the school day (Art, Health, Mandarin, Band, and Peer Resources). Our new seven period model will also provide most 6th graders the opportunity to take our Elective Wheel. The Elective Wheel consists of Health, and three of the following four electives: Introduction to Band, Introduction to Mandarin, Bikes, and Art. 7th and 8th graders will now have access to a robust Band program that is fully resourced with new instruments and a full time Music teacher, as well as the opportunity to take Mandarin World Language 1a and 1b, which will give them one year of World Language credit for High School.
Our theme for this school year is “Love”, which we define at MLK in a very specific way:

At MLK, Love looks like high expectations of our students. We expect and KNOW that our students can and will achieve the high academic goals that we all have for them. We expect and KNOW that our students can and will be responsible and respectful citizens of our community. And, we also know that it takes work- from our staff, our families, and our students to nurture their growth, which is what LOVE IS in action.
There are so many exciting new resources, opportunities, and people coming to MLK this school year, AND there are some things that have not changed: MLK is a Community School, a Project Based Learning school, a Restorative Practices school, a Warm Demander school, a Whole Child, Sense of Belonging, Youth Voice, and Rigorous Learning school! At MLK, students, families, and staff will receive the support they need for students to engage in rigorous learning, in a caring and collaborative community that values and promotes agency of students, families, and staff.
MLK is a PHONE FREE school. All students will be issued a phone pouch, and must keep their phone locked in their phone pouch during the school day. Any phone that is seen during the school day, which is not in a phone pouch, will be confiscated and held for a parent/guardian to pick up at their convenience. If you need to contact your student during the school day, please call the main office at 415-330-1500. Students can request a pass to use the phone in our counseling office when needed.
There will be a special 6th Grade Orientation assembly for all 6th grade students and their families on the first day of school. 6th grade students and their parents/guardians should report to the cafeteria at 9:30am on 8/16 for the assembly, which will conclude at 10:30am. There will also be a backpack giveaway for 6th graders on Monday 8/14 and Tuesday 8/15 from 10am-12pm at MLK, and a welcome party for 6th grade families on Saturday 8/19 from 10am-1pm at MLK with a BBQ, prize raffle, and fun activities!
Student’s schedules can be seen on ParentVue and StudentVue by Tuesday, 8/15. Please help your student print or write down their schedule for the first day of school.
We are starting this school year strong, with a full team of teachers, and an abundance of opportunities and resources for our students, families, and staff! Dear MLK Families,
I hope this letter finds you happy, rested, and feeling ready to welcome our students back to school!
I am excited to share some wonderful new developments at MLK Middle School. First of all, I’d like to introduce myself as MLK’s new Principal! I have worked with MLK as the Assistant Principal for the past five years, and I’m looking forward to supporting our amazing MLK students, families, and staff.
MLK now has a new seven period school day. The seven period day allows ALL students to experience a variety of rigorous, high-interest electives, which will be offered throughout the school day (Art, Health, Mandarin, Band, and Peer Resources). Our new seven period model will also provide most 6th graders the opportunity to take our Elective Wheel. The Elective Wheel consists of Health, and three of the following four electives: Introduction to Band, Introduction to Mandarin, Bikes, and Art. 7th and 8th graders will now have access to a robust Band program that is fully resourced with new instruments and a full time Music teacher, as well as the opportunity to take Mandarin World Language 1a and 1b, which will give them one year of World Language credit for High School.
Our theme for this school year is “Love”, which we define at MLK in a very specific way:

¡Estamos comenzando este año escolar con fuerza, con un equipo completo de maestros y una gran cantidad de oportunidades y recursos para nuestros estudiantes, familias y personal! Espero saludar a los estudiantes y las familias el primer día de clases, que es el miércoles 16 de agosto. La escuela comienza a las 9:30 a. m., pero ayude a su estudiante a adquirir el hábito de llegar 15 minutos antes todos los días para que llegue a tiempo y esté preparado para comenzar su día como un estudiante seguro, respetuoso y responsable.
