Annual School Climate Family Survey Response Results
THANK YOU to MLK Families for completing the survey. We reached our highest response numbers beating the last all time high in 2022. 121 families, 33% responded to the survey. Once MLK MS receives the results, we will share the information with you. Thank you again for your support!

Dear 6th grade families!
Spring is a great time to get ahead and make appointments for 7th grade immunization requirements.
California law requires that before students enter 7th grade they must show evidence of having received:
- Tdap booster vaccine (usually given at ages 10-12)
- 2nd chicken pox vaccine (Varicella)
- 2nd MMR vaccine (Measles, Mumps and Rubella)
If your student needs these vaccines, or any other vaccine, please contact their doctor or community clinic. Afterwards, please bring in a copy or email a picture of their immunization record to me, Nurse Crystal, at sokolovc@sfusd.edu. Feel free to email me with any questions!

The Resource Alignment Initiative (RAI) is a multifaceted plan to align SFUSD’s resources to its goals. It began in August 2023 with an honest discussion between SFUSD staff and the Board of Education about the current state of SFUSD’s schools and what steps we need to take to make them a better place for students.

Chinese for Affirmative Action is hosting Community Service Days
Chinese for Affirmative Action is hosting Community Service Days on April 17 (Wed), May 16 (Thu), June 10 (Mon). We will be providing drop-in employment services at our CAA office in Chinatown (10 am-4 pm), and immigration legal services at San Francisco City College, Chinatown Branch (10 am-1 pm)! No appointments needed, but we ask folks to be vaccinated, and masking is required. Please refer to the flyer for more information. Thank you!

La primavera es un buen momento para adelantarse y programar citas para los requisitos de vacunación del 7º grado.
La ley de California requiere que antes de que los estudiantes ingresen al 7° grado, deben mostrar evidencia de haber recibido:
- Vacuna de refuerzo Tdap (generalmente administrada entre los 10 y los 12 años)

On Wednesday, March 27th, your student’s designs and work will be on display at our 7th annual MLK STrEAM (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts, Math) night! We are requiring that all MLK students attend* STrEAM night, so they can present, share, showcase and engage families and community members with what they have been working on and learning. We will have a MLK Band Performance, free books and raffle prizes!

8th Grade Algebra 1 for 2024-2025

Dear MLK Families:
As you may know, Algebra 1 in eighth grade is rolling out across SFUSD middle schools and K-8 schools in different ways for the 2024-25 school year. I’m writing to share an update regarding the math curriculum at our school for eighth graders next school year.
At MLK, while we won’t be piloting an Algebra 1 prototype during the 2024-25 school year, eighth graders will have access to Algebra 1 in the following ways:
- Summer Algebra 1 Intensive will be offered in 2025 to eighth graders attending MLK between their eighth and ninth grade years. All students at MLK will have the option to apply to the program. More information will be available by the beginning of 2025.
- Online Algebra 1 Course will be offered during the 2024-25 school year to eighth graders. Students will have access to two online options for Algebra 1. More information will be provided by the beginning of the 2024-25 school year.
Pilot schools were selected based on the readiness of staffing and students. For example, some schools will be able to pilot Algebra 1 because there are students who have already met the designated proficiency criteria above and have adequate staffing to provide Algebra 1 instruction.
We are committed to providing the supports your child needs to be successful in math.

Chinese for Affirmative Action is hosting Community Service Days on April 17 (Wed), May 16 (Thu), June 10 (Mon). We will be providing drop-in employment services at our CAA office in Chinatown (10 am-4 pm), and immigration legal services at San Francisco City College, Chinatown Branch (10 am-1 pm)! Como sabrán, Álgebra 1 en octavo grado se implementará en las escuelas intermedias y en las escuelas K-8 del SFUSD de diferentes maneras para el año escolar 2024-25. 8th Grade Algebra 1 for 2024-2025

Dear MLK Families:
As you may know, Algebra 1 in eighth grade is rolling out across SFUSD middle schools and K-8 schools in different ways for the 2024-25 school year. I’m writing to share an update regarding the math curriculum at our school for eighth graders next school year.
At MLK, while we won’t be piloting an Algebra 1 prototype during the 2024-25 school year, eighth graders will have access to Algebra 1 in the following ways:
- Summer Algebra 1 Intensive will be offered in 2025 to eighth graders attending MLK between their eighth and ninth grade years. All students at MLK will have the option to apply to the program. More information will be available by the beginning of 2025.
- Online Algebra 1 Course will be offered during the 2024-25 school year to eighth graders. Students will have access to two online options for Algebra 1. More information will be provided by the beginning of the 2024-25 school year.
Pilot schools were selected based on the readiness of staffing and students. For example, some schools will be able to pilot Algebra 1 because there are students who have already met the designated proficiency criteria above and have adequate staffing to provide Algebra 1 instruction.

Asian American Parent Advisory Committee
SFUSD is seeking parents and guardians of Asian and Asian American SFUSD students from all grade levels (pre-K to 12th grade) and communities to serve on the Asian American Parent Advisory Committee.
The Asian American Parent Advisory Committee aims to actively listen, educate, and advocate for the diverse needs of Asian American families. Through these efforts, the Asian American Parent Advisory Committee, in partnership with other SFUSD parent advisory committees, will work to ensure all SFUSD schools foster rigorous, inclusive and supportive educational environments where every student can thrive both academically and emotionally.

Latinx Parent Advisory Group
The San Francisco Unified School District is launching a new Parent Advisory Group for Latinx parents. Beginning this spring, parents and caregivers of Latinx students in SFUSD will be able to participate in order to hear about important updates from District and to give their input. There will be opportunities to come to general community meetings, participated in subcommittees to discuss certain topics more in-depth and even to be a part of the Leadership Committee.

Asian American Parent Advisory Committee
SFUSD is seeking parents and guardians of Asian and Asian American SFUSD students from all grade levels (pre-K to 12th grade) and communities to serve on the Asian American Parent Advisory Committee.
The Asian American Parent Advisory Committee aims to actively listen, educate, and advocate for the diverse needs of Asian American families. Through these efforts, the Asian American Parent Advisory Committee, in partnership with other SFUSD parent advisory committees, will work to ensure all SFUSD schools foster rigorous, inclusive and supportive educational environments where every student can thrive both academically and emotionally.

Latinx Parent Advisory Group
The San Francisco Unified School District is launching a new Parent Advisory Group for Latinx parents. Beginning this spring, parents and caregivers of Latinx students in SFUSD will be able to participate in order to hear about important updates from District and to give their input. There will be opportunities to come to general community meetings, participated in subcommittees to discuss certain topics more in-depth and even to be a part of the Leadership Committee.

We are in the middle of Student Led Conferences. School will end at 2:15PM during conference week. All students must hold a meeting with their parents/guardians and teachers. 8th Grade students must hold this meeting, otherwise they are unable to attend the graduation ceremony.

Beacon After School Program Closure 01/19
Greetings MLK Community. On Friday, January 19th, the afterschool program will be closed due to staff training. Please make arrangements for your child to be picked up or travel home at the end of the school day at 4pm. Afterschool programming will resume on Monday, January 22th.
School Site Council 01/11 Meeting Summary
On Thursday January 11, 2024, MLK’s School Site Council held a meeting on Zoom. The SSC reviewed mid-year data. We looked at Student Sense of Belonging and Reading Proficiency.
Sense of Belonging generally had positive change from Spring 2023, with the exception of “teacher or some other adult who really cares about me.”
Reading Proficiency at MLK MS is currently at 25.1% or 80 students scoring Proficient and above. Of the 80 students proficient, only 1 is an English Language Learner. The other 79 are not English Language Learners.
Next Steps: In February 2024’s SSC Meeting, MLK SSC will be holding a community meeting to gather feedback and information to develop the budget for the next school year. We hope families will be able to attend to assist with shaping what the priorities for MLK MS are for next school year.
826 Valencia and Chinese for Affirmative Action Workshop
"This is a two session workshop in collaboration between 826 Valencia and Chinese for Affirmative Action. This workshop is open to bilingual/multilingual students between 4th to 8th grade, and will focus on what rights students have as multilingual learners and how they can use art, writing, and poetry to creatively express themselves. In this workshop, students will learn why being bilingual/multilingual is a superpower and create their own art and writing. This is an exciting opportunity for their work to be published in a zine that will be released in May 2024! Programa extracurricular de Beacon Cerrado por un día 01/19

El jueves 11 de enero de 2024, el Consejo Escolar de MLK celebró una reunión por Zoom. El SSC revisó los datos de mitad de año. Analizamos el sentido de pertenencia de los estudiantes y su competencia en lectura.
El sentido de pertenencia en general tuvo cambios positivos desde la primavera de 2023, con la excepción de “maestro o algún otro adulto que realmente se preocupa por mí”.
El dominio de la lectura en MLK MS se encuentra actualmente en 25.1% o 80 estudiantes con puntajes competentes o superiores. De los 80 estudiantes competentes, sólo 1 es un estudiante de idioma inglés. Los otros 79 no son estudiantes del idioma inglés.

Please support our effort to create the best conditions possible for your child to learn and grow by reminding them to lock their phone in their pouch during the school day. Schedule Revision
MLK will be increasing our instructional minutes (the amount of time that students are learning). Starting next semester (1/8/24), we will have a new bell schedule to increase our instructional minutes. The main changes to our schedule are:
- Classes on block days will be 5 minutes longer
- Lunch will be 40 minutes (instead of 50 min)
- We will no longer have the 10 minute afternoon break.

Students will lose their Cobra Eligibility for two or more behavior referrals, not showing up for detention, fighting, bullying, or being suspended. When a student loses their Cobra Eligibility, they receive a Restoration Plan, which has a list of tasks that a student must complete to restore their eligibility. Please encourage your child to maintain their Cobra Eligibility by being safe, respectful, and responsible at all times.
Food at MLK
At MLK all students have access to breakfast and lunch everyday for free. Whether your child eats the food provided by our school, or they pack a lunch from home, please encourage your child to eat a healthy and nutritious breakfast and lunch. As a reminder, we do not have microwaves available for students to use, so please do not send them to school with anything that needs to be heated. For school safety reasons, we CANNOT accept food deliveries from services like DoorDash or UberEats. Any food deliveries will be held in the office until the end of the school day.

Dear MLK Families,
First off I want to acknowledge you, the parent/guardian, for all of the work it takes to support, raise, and be a role model for your child. As a parent of two kids (a sixteen year old daughter and 9 year old boy), I am here with you!
As we wrap up the first half of this school year, I want to celebrate the amazing students, staff, and families at MLK who continue to go above and beyond in support of learning and joy. Here are just a few photo highlights from the first semester:
Our goals for students’ this year are that students will feel accepted, valued, and included by others, students will grow in their academic achievement, and that students will demonstrate agency and ownership of their learning and school community. Our core mindset at MLK to support our goals is “love”, which we define as “the will to extend one's self for the purpose of nurturing one's own or another's [personal] growth…”
You, the parent/guardian, are considered an important partner in the work we do at MLK, the following are some updates and reminders for how you can continue to support the work we are doing with your child at MLK:

Please make sure that your child brings their school laptop to school with them everyday. The laptop should be charged. We do not have the resources to replace broken or lost laptops, so it is very important that you help your child keep their laptop safe and in working order.

Estimadas Familias de MLK,

11/13: MLK MS: Student Led Conferences - Early Dismissal at 2:15 PM all week, School Site Council 11/16
Greetings MLK Family,
Schedule your Student Led Conference!
Student Led Conferences will be held from November 13th - November 17th. School will end at 2:15PM during conference week. All students must hold a meeting with their parents/guardians and teachers. 8th Grade students must hold this meeting, otherwise they are unable to attend the graduation ceremony. Your child will be bringing the following scheduling sheet home to schedule a Student led Conference. Please fill out the form and return it to the homeroom teacher.
School Site Council Elections
There was 1 parent elected and a 3 way tie for 2 seats. After consulting the bylaws, the best way to move forward is to seat all 4 of the nominees as elected. Thank you all for participating in this process.
As such, the SSC membership will be expanded. There will now be 4 parents, 4 students, 1 administrator, 5 classroom teachers, and 2 other school staff, for a total of 16 SSC Membership. A quorum of 9 will be needed at SSC. Previously, the quorum number was 7.

Vision to Learn
Dear MLK families,
Vision to Learn, a non-profit that works to provide no-cost glasses to students, will be on campus next week and again in December to screen students for vision. All 7th grade students who have failed State-mandated vision testing as well as 6th and 8th graders identified with vision concerns will be screened unless families opt out. Please see the memo below.
Playfighting letter from MLK Administration
Greetings MLK Families and Guardians,
Recently, our community is witnessing and experiencing a lot of dangerous behavior in the form of "play fighting" among students. This dangerous behavior needs to stop immediately! Play fighting could lead to misunderstandings and/or serious injuries. As a result, play fighting will not be tolerated at MLK MS under any circumstances.
Any students seen swinging their arms towards each other (even if no physical contact is made), playful hitting, pushing, shoving, jumping on each other, playful kicking, playful wrestling, throwing things at each other, or taking other people's things, will be reported to school administration and the student will be required to attend lunch detention. In addition, a call home will be made.
Our learning community needs all students to be SAFE, RESPECTFUL, and RESPONSIBLE.

Many people associate our well-being with only physical health but we have to remember that it consists of mental health as well. Mental health is vital because it shapes our ability to make decisions, form relationships, and shape the world we live in.
Here are some tips to improve your mental health:
- Send loving-kindness into the world - with so much going on in the world at any given moment it's important to send love and kindness to those in need. It makes you feel good, too!
- Do something you enjoy - go for a walk, spend time with you your family, read, write, etc.
- Surround yourself with a caring and supportive community - be around people who uplift you and want to see you succeed
- Move your body - there is movement for everyone to enjoy such as running, biking, hiking, etc.
- Eat nutritious food - food is fuel so you want to give your body the right nutrients to have enough brain power for the day
- Get quality sleep - a minimum of 6 hours of sleep each night for regeneration is important for the brain and body

MLK Beacon After School Program would like to invite you to our annual Lights On Afterschool event on Thursday, October 26th. This event is to promote and show off how amazing afterschool programs are and we would love to see you all join us in celebrating this time. - Eat mindfully - take a moment to appreciate your food and think about what you're putting into your body
Mindfulness has been proven to help relieve anxiety and depression and cultivate more self-awareness both internally and externally. Taking 5 minutes out of our day to be mindful can make a huge difference in our lives.

SFUSD District Updates
District Advisory Committee
The district is launching a District Advisory Committee (DAC) to deliberate and provide public feedback on resource alignment strategies. Please review the following information about how you can be involved in the District Advisory Committee, including the eligibility criteria and application process.
Who will be the members of the DAC?
The DAC will consist of 11 members that represent the diversity of the district’s community, including parents/guardians, students, teachers, administrators, community organization partners to SFUSD, labor partners, land use experts, business community members, and neighborhood association or other affiliations representing landowners and/or renter interests.
Meetings will be held in person, at least monthly. All meetings will follow the Brown Act, which means they will be open to the public with materials publicly available. Participants’ personal contact information will be confidential.
How to Apply?
If you are interested in applying to serve on the DAC, please fill out this application. The deadline to apply is Oct. 10, 2023 at 12:00 p.m.
School Site Council Fall Summit
Join us for a fall family partnership event on Saturday, Oct. 14 from 8:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. at Everett Middle School.
This event is intended for current School Site Council parents/guardians, SFUSD Parent advisory members and Educational Partners who support SFUSD families/guardians.
This event will provide families and caregivers an opportunity to connect with one another to share best practices for building school community partnership.

Chinese for Affirmative Action is hosting Community Service Days on October 12 (Thu), November 15 (Wed), December 11 (Monday). We will be providing drop-in employment services at our CAA office in Chinatown (10 am-4 pm), and immigration legal services at San Francisco City College, Chinatown Branch (10 am-1 pm)! No appointments needed, but we ask folks to be vaccinated, and masking is required. Please refer to the flyer for more information. Thank you!

Mindfulness is the practice of being aware in the present moment. Mindfulness practices have been shown to increase focus, attention, self-control, classroom participation, and compassion. As well as improved academic performance, ability to resolve conflict, and overall well-being with decreased levels of stress, depression, anxiety, and disruptive behavior.
Here are three mindfulness practices we can implement in our daily lives.
1. Wish your fellow peers loving kindness throughout the day
2. Upon waking share with someone three things you're grateful for
3. Start your work day with three deep breaths with your teacher or peers

The purpose of this conversation is to establish a partnership between you and the school to make your child as successful as possible during their time at MLK Middle School. Phone Pouch Reminder
MLK MS is a phone free school. Phones and earbuds must be locked in the Yondr pouch. There will be regular “pouch checks” in Advisory. Phones are earbuds not in pouches will be confiscated and held at student support for the student’s family to pick up.

Recordatorio de funda para teléfono

Student Schedules:
Students Schedules are now posted on StudentVue and ParentVue. Please ask your child to login and see where your Advisory Room is. If you are unable to see your schedule, please go to Room 102 tomorrow morning.
6th Grade and New to MLK Transfer Orientation:
Families are invited to attend 6th Grade Orientation assembly for all 6th grade students and their families on the first day of school. 6th grade students and their parents/guardians should report to the cafeteria at 9:30am on 8/16 for the assembly, which will conclude at 10:30am.
Yondr Phone Pouch:
Starting on the first day of school, students will be required to keep their phones secured and locked in the Yondr phone pouch. 6th graders will receive their pouch at the 6th grade orientation meeting on the first day of school. Returning 7th and 8th graders are required to bring their phone pouch with them. There will be regular “pouch checks” in Advisory. Any 7th and 8th graders that do not have a pouch on the first day of school will be issued a one-time replacement.
Our phone policy is aligned with SFUSD’s cell phone policy, and is enforced with the academic and social-emotional wellbeing of our students in mind.
Parents/guardians and students that need to make contact with each other during the school day can use our school phone lines. To contact our main office, parents/guardians can call 415-330-1500.

MLK MS: Principal's Welcome Letter 2023
Dear MLK Families,
I hope this letter finds you happy, rested, and feeling ready to welcome our students back to school!
I am excited to share some wonderful new developments at MLK Middle School. First of all, I’d like to introduce myself as MLK’s new Principal! I have worked with MLK as the Assistant Principal for the past five years, and I’m looking forward to supporting our amazing MLK students, families, and staff.
MLK now has a new seven period school day. The seven period day allows ALL students to experience a variety of rigorous, high-interest electives, which will be offered throughout the school day (Art, Health, Mandarin, Band, and Peer Resources). Our new seven period model will also provide most 6th graders the opportunity to take our Elective Wheel. The Elective Wheel consists of Health, and three of the following four electives: Introduction to Band, Introduction to Mandarin, Bikes, and Art. 7th and 8th graders will now have access to a robust Band program that is fully resourced with new instruments and a full time Music teacher, as well as the opportunity to take Mandarin World Language 1a and 1b, which will give them one year of World Language credit for High School.
Our theme for this school year is “Love”, which we define at MLK in a very specific way:
“Love is the will to extend one's self for the purpose of nurturing one's own or another's [personal] growth...”

At MLK, Love looks like high expectations of our students. We expect and KNOW that our students can and will achieve the high academic goals that we all have for them. We expect and KNOW that our students can and will be responsible and respectful citizens of our community. And, we also know that it takes work- from our staff, our families, and our students to nurture their growth, which is what LOVE IS in action.
There are so many exciting new resources, opportunities, and people coming to MLK this school year, AND there are some things that have not changed: MLK is a Community School, a Project Based Learning school, a Restorative Practices school, a Warm Demander school, a Whole Child, Sense of Belonging, Youth Voice, and Rigorous Learning school! At MLK, students, families, and staff will receive the support they need for students to engage in rigorous learning, in a caring and collaborative community that values and promotes agency of students, families, and staff.
MLK is a PHONE FREE school. All students will be issued a phone pouch, and must keep their phone locked in their phone pouch during the school day. Any phone that is seen during the school day, which is not in a phone pouch, will be confiscated and held for a parent/guardian to pick up at their convenience. If you need to contact your student during the school day, please call the main office at 415-330-1500. Students can request a pass to use the phone in our counseling office when needed.
There will be a special 6th Grade Orientation assembly for all 6th grade students and their families on the first day of school. 6th grade students and their parents/guardians should report to the cafeteria at 9:30am on 8/16 for the assembly, which will conclude at 10:30am. There will also be a backpack giveaway for 6th graders on Monday 8/14 and Tuesday 8/15 from 10am-12pm at MLK, and a welcome party for 6th grade families on Saturday 8/19 from 10am-1pm at MLK with a BBQ, prize raffle, and fun activities!

1er día de clases:

La Rueda Electiva consiste en Salud y tres de las siguientes cuatro electivas: Introducción a la Banda, Introducción al mandarín, Bicicletas y Arte. Los estudiantes de 7.º y 8.º grado ahora tendrán acceso a un sólido programa de banda que cuenta con todos los recursos con nuevos instrumentos y un maestro de música de tiempo completo, así como la oportunidad de tomar Mandarín Idioma mundial 1a y 1b, lo que les dará un año de Idioma mundial. crédito para la escuela secundaria.
Nuestro tema para este año escolar es "Amor", que definimos en MLK de una manera muy específica:
“El amor es la voluntad de extenderse con el propósito de nutrir el crecimiento [personal] propio o ajeno...”― M.Scott Peck.
En MLK, el amor tiene altas expectativas para nuestros estudiantes. Esperamos y SABEMOS que nuestros estudiantes pueden y lograrán las altas metas académicas que todos tenemos para ellos. Esperamos y SABEMOS que nuestros estudiantes pueden y serán ciudadanos responsables y respetuosos de nuestra comunidad. Y también sabemos que se necesita trabajo de nuestro personal, nuestras familias y nuestros estudiantes para nutrir su crecimiento, que es el AMOR en acción.
Hay tantos recursos nuevos y emocionantes, oportunidades y personas que vienen a MLK este año escolar, Y hay algunas cosas que no han cambiado: MLK es una escuela comunitaria, una escuela de aprendizaje basado en proyectos, una escuela de prácticas restaurativas, una escuela de suave solicitud, una escuela de niño completo, sentido de pertenencia, voz juvenil y aprendizaje riguroso. En MLK, los estudiantes, las familias y el personal recibirán el apoyo que necesitan para que los estudiantes participen en un aprendizaje riguroso, en una comunidad solidaria y colaboradora que valora y promueve la agencia de los estudiantes, las familias y el personal.
MLK es una escuela SIN TELÉFONO. Todos los estudiantes recibirán una bolsa para teléfono y deben mantener su teléfono bajo llave en su bolsa durante el día escolar. Cualquier teléfono que se vea durante el día escolar, que no esté en una bolsa de teléfono, será confiscado y retenido para que el padre/tutor lo recoja cuando le resulte conveniente. Si necesita comunicarse con su estudiante durante el día escolar, llame a la oficina principal al 415-330-1500. Los estudiantes pueden solicitar un pase para usar el teléfono en nuestra oficina de consejería cuando sea necesario.
Habrá una asamblea especial de orientación para todos los estudiantes del 6to grado y sus familias el primer día de clases. Los estudiantes de 6to grado y sus padres o tutores deben presentarse en la cafetería a las 9:30 am a 10:30 am, el 16 de agosto para una asamblea. También regalan mochilas para los alumnos de 6to grado el lunes 14 de agosto y el martes 15 de agosto de 10 am a 12 pm en MLK, y una fiesta de bienvenida para las familias de 6to grado el sábado 19 de agosto de 10 am a 1 pm en MLK con una parrillada. rifa de premios y actividades divertidas!
Las clases se pueden ver en ParentVue y StudentVue el martes 8/15. Ayude a su estudiante a imprimir o escribir su horario para el primer día de clase.
¡Estamos comenzando este año escolar con fuerza, con un equipo completo de maestros y una gran cantidad de oportunidades y recursos para nuestros estudiantes, familias y personal! Espero saludar a los estudiantes y las familias el primer día de clases, que es el miércoles 16 de agosto. La escuela comienza a las 9:30 a. m., pero ayude a su estudiante a adquirir el hábito de llegar 15 minutos antes todos los días para que llegue a tiempo y esté preparado para comenzar su día como un estudiante seguro, respetuoso y responsable.
