Greetings MLK Families,

School Starts at 9:25AM

School start at 9:25AM and classes start at 9:30AM. Students must be in class by 9:30AM, arriving after 9:30AM, student will be tardy. Please encourage your child to sleep early and be ready for school.

Student Tardy Policy

Reading Log

All students should receive a reading log from English class. Students should be reading 20 minutes a day. 

Student Planners

MLK MS has given every student a student planner. Students are writing their assignments into the student planners. Please check your child’s planner and see what homework needs to be complete.

Parents as Partners Weeks

Advisory Teacher will call you by phone to introduce themselves and get to know your family and child better.  The purpose of this conversation is to establish a partnership between you and the school to make your child as successful as possible during their time at MLK Middle School.  The phone call should take approximately 10 Minutes.  Please listen out for calls from your child’s teachers this week.  Thank you and we look forward to working with you this school year!

Phone Policy for Students

In order to create the best learning and social/emotional conditions possible for our students, MLK IS A PHONE-FREE SCHOOL. Students are required to turn their phones OFF and put them AWAY before entering the school building. This includes (whether on or off, being used or not) 

• Phones

• iPads
• Earbuds
• Personal Computers

Our phone policy is aligned with SFUSD’s cell phone policy, and is enforced with the academic and social-emotional wellbeing of our students in mind. 

Parents/guardians and students that need to make contact with each other during the school day can use our school phone lines. To contact our main office, parents/guardians can call 415-330-1500.

Principal Welcome Letter

Dear MLK Community,

Welcome to a new school year at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Academic Middle School!

I hope you had a wonderful summer filled with rest, joy, and time with people you love. I am thrilled to welcome our returning 7th and 8th graders as well as all of our new families to the MLK community.

I am also excited to introduce myself as MLK’s new Principal! I am a San Francisco native and Portola neighbor who has worked at MLK since 2015 in the roles of teacher, coordinator, project-based learning coach, and Assistant Principal. Our new Assistant Principal, Jeremy Cegers, comes to us from Arkansas where he served as an administrator and teacher for many years. Together we are looking forward to supporting our amazing MLK students, families, and staff.

This year, our shared vision is that by the time 8th graders are promoted, Every MLK student is ready to meet the challenges of high school and beyond. This means that students have ownership over their learning (Student Agency) with a backpack full of supplies, a good night's sleep and a full stomach, on time and ready to engage in Rigorous and Relevant Learning all day long. It also means that as a Community School, we celebrate and honor the strengths and needs of each student by recognizing all of their identities and experiences (Whole Child) and that every student and family feels seen, included, and loved (Sense of Belonging).

FILL OUT THE Multipurpose Family Income Form 

All meals are free this school year but your Multipurpose Family Income Form (MFIF) form is still requested to support school funding! HELP MLK lunch funding by filling out the form! This form assist with informing the district and the state of California the needs of MLK MS. This form assisted with MLK MS receiving the Community School Grant, adding $250,000 per year, as well as Title 1 Funding at $108,000 per year. In the past few years, students qualifying for free or reduced lunch during the school year also got $120 for summer EBT.

Primer día de clase

La escuela comienza el lunes 17 de agosto de 2026.  La escuela empieza a las 9:25AM y las clases empiezan a las 9:30AM. Comunidad de MLK,

Bienvenidos a un año escolar nuevo a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Academic Middle School!

Espero que hayan tenido un verano maravilloso, lleno de descanso, alegría y tiempo con sus seres queridos. Me entusiasma dar la bienvenida a la comunidad de MLK tanto a los alumnos de 7.º y 8.º grado que regresan como a todas las familias nuevas.

¡También me complace presentarme como la nueva directora de MLK! Soy nativa de San Francisco y vecina de Portola; he trabajado en MLK desde 2015 desempeñándome como maestra, coordinadora, asesor de aprendizaje basado en proyectos y subdirector. Nuestro nuevo subdirector, Jeremy Cegers, llega desde Arkansas, donde trabajó durante muchos años como administrador y maestro. Este año, nuestra visión compartida es que, para cuando los alumnos de  8.º grado pasen al siguiente nivel, cada estudiante de MLK esté preparado para afrontar los desafíos de la escuela secundaria y el futuro. Esto significa que los estudiantes asumen el control de su propio aprendizaje (agencia estudiantil) y llegan puntuales —con el material necesario, habiendo descansado bien y bien alimentados—, listos para participar en un aprendizaje riguroso y relevante durante toda la jornada. También significa que, como escuela comunitaria, celebramos y honramos las fortalezas y necesidades de cada alumno reconociendo todas sus identidades y experiencias (enfoque integral del estudiante), y que cada estudiante y familia se siente visto, incluido y valorado (sentido de pertenencia).

COMPLETE el Formulario de Ingreso Familiar Multipropósito

Todas las comidas son gratuitas este año escolar, pero aún se solicita su Formulario de Ingreso Familiar Multipropósito (MFIF) para respaldar la financiación escolar. ¡AYUDE a financiar el almuerzo de MLK completando el formulario! Este formulario ayuda a informar al distrito y al estado de California las necesidades de MLK MS.
