The next School Site Council meeting will be on Thursday 05/28/2026 at 5:30PM via Zoom Meeting. Please click on the link below for Zoom link and agenda.
We will be discussing the Community Schools Implementation Plan.
MLK Leadership Transition
Dear Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Academic Middle School Community–
As we rapidly approach the end of another full school year, we are writing to provide updates to you regarding the MLK administrative team. We want to give our deepest thanks to our outgoing principal, Byron Gougoumis. He stepped up last year from the Assistant Principal role into the Principal role and we deeply appreciate his leadership. We wish him luck in his next endeavor.
We are excited to announce our recommendation for Tamar Sberlo as our incoming Principal, pending Board of Education approval. Ms. Sberlo is the current Assistant Principal and prior coach and brings with her instructional capacity, knowledge of the current students and many years of educational and leadership experience.
You can read her introduction to the community in her letter attached to this message. We will be beginning the process to hire someone into Ms. Sberlo’s current role as Assistant Principal.
Thank you to the School Site Council and Union Building Committee who selected the hiring committee and held a community meeting to provide transparent information about the process of hiring the next principal. A huge shout out to the hiring committee for the time they spent on the principal interviews.
While transitions can bring uncertainty, they are also an opportunity to recommit to shared community values and the work of providing students with a transformative educational experience in the best traditions of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School.

Dear Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Academic Middle School Community,
My name is Tamar Sberlo, and I am honored and thrilled to introduce myself as the incoming principal of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Academic Middle School, having served as a Peer Resources teacher and program coordinator for almost a decade, a year as a project-based learning coach, and most recently as the Assistant Principal.
As a product of SFUSD, an SFUSD parent, and a Portola neighbor, I have fallen more in love with our community with every passing year. Our students are strong-minded and curious, our families are engaged and resilient, and our amazing staff are dedicated and passionate. When I joined MLK in 2015, we had the highest number of referrals in the district. Since then, our school has become a pioneer for project based learning, proactive and restorative practices, youth voice and the community school model. I believe our reputation as a school is outdated; it is time to make a new name for ourselves as a shining example of what education can look like.
What you can expect from me as a leader is enthusiasm, dedication, collaboration, accountability, deep listening, openness to feedback, and an unwavering drive towards equity - which means academic excellence for EACH and EVERY student. I firmly believe that community issues can only be solved in community; collaborative decision making and distributive leadership is how we will make the changes we all want to see for our young people.
Our goal is to prepare students to face the challenges of high school and beyond. There is a lot of work to do. We have bold dreams for our students and families. And we will reach them, together.
Thank you for allowing me to be in community with all of you. I am so excited to get started.

又一個完整的學年即將結束，我們特此致函，向您報告馬丁路德金中學行政團隊的最新情況。我們衷心感謝即將卸任的校長拜倫·古古米斯(Byron Gougoumis)先生。他去年從副校長晉升為校長，我們由衷感謝他的領導能力。祝他在未來的工作中一切順利。
我們很高興地宣布，我們已推薦塔瑪爾·斯伯洛(Tamar Sberlo)女士擔任新任校長，目前正在等待教育委員會的批准。斯伯洛女士現任副校長，曾擔任教師教練，她擁有豐富的教學經驗、對學生情況的了解以及多年的教育和領導經驗。

Transición de liderazgo de MLK
Estimada comunidad de la Escuela Académica Intermedia Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.:
A medida que nos acercamos rápidamente al final de otro año escolar, les escribimos para brindarles actualizaciones con respecto al Personal Administrativo de MLK. Queremos expresar nuestro más profundo agradecimiento a nuestro Director saliente, Byron Gougoumis. El año pasado asumió el cargo de Director, transicionando desde su rol anterior como Subdirector, y apreciamos profundamente su liderazgo. Le deseamos mucha suerte en su próximo proyecto.
Nos entusiasma anunciar nuestra recomendación de Tamar Sberlo como nuestra próxima Directora, a la espera de la aprobación de la Junta de Educación. La Sra. Sberlo es la actual Subdirectora —y anteriormente fue instructora—; aporta consigo capacidades pedagógicas, conocimiento de los estudiantes actuales y muchos años de experiencia en educación y liderazgo.
Pueden leer su presentación a la comunidad en la carta adjunta a este mensaje. Daremos inicio al proceso para contratar a una persona que ocupe el cargo actual de la Sra. Sberlo como Subdirectora.
Agradecemos al Consejo Escolar del Plantel y al Comité Sindical del Edificio, quienes seleccionaron al comité de Contratación y organizaron una Reunión Comunitaria para brindar información transparente sobre el proceso de selección del próximo Director. Un reconocimiento especial al Comité de Contratación por el tiempo que dedicaron a las entrevistas para el cargo de Director.
Si bien las transiciones pueden generar incertidumbres, también representan una oportunidad para reafirmar nuestro compromiso con los valores comunitarios compartidos y con la labor de brindar a los estudiantes una experiencia educativa transformadora, en consonancia con las mejores tradiciones de la Escuela Académica Intermedia Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Mi nombre es Tamar Sberlo, y es un honor y una gran felicidad presentarme ante ustedes como la próxima Directora de la Escuela Académica Intermedia Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., tras haber servido durante casi una década como maestra y coordinadora del programa *Peer Resources* (Recursos para compañeros estudiantiles), un año como Instructora de aprendizaje de Educación Integral basado en proyectos de grupo y, más recientemente, como Subdirectora.
Como egresada del SFUSD, madre de un estudiante del SFUSD y vecina del vecindario del distrito Portola, me he enamorado aún más de nuestra comunidad con cada año que pasa. Nuestros estudiantes son decididos y curiosos; nuestras familias son participativas y resilientes; y nuestro increíble personal docente es dedicado y apasionado. Cuando me incorporé a MLK en 2015, registramos el mayor número de remisiones disciplinarias de todo el distrito. Desde entonces, nuestra escuela se ha convertido en pionera en Educación Integral, aprendizaje basado en proyectos de grupo, las prácticas proactivas y restaurativas, la promoción de la voz de los jóvenes y el modelo de Escuela Comunitaria. Creo que nuestra reputación como escuela ha quedado obsoleta; es hora de forjarnos un nuevo nombre y convertirnos en un ejemplo brillante de lo que la educación puede llegar a ser.
Lo que pueden esperar de mí como líder es entusiasmo, dedicación, colaboración, rendición de cuentas, escucha atenta, apertura a recibir retroalimentación y un impulso inquebrantable hacia la equidad, lo cual significa excelencia académica para TODOS y CADA UNO de los estudiantes. Creo firmemente que los problemas de la comunidad solo pueden resolverse dentro de la misma comunidad; la toma de decisiones colaborativa y el liderazgo distribuido son la vía para lograr los cambios que todos deseamos ver para nuestros jóvenes.
Nuestro objetivo es preparar a los estudiantes para enfrentar los desafíos de la Escuela Secundaria y de la vida más allá de ella. Queda mucho trabajo por hacer. Tenemos sueños audaces para nuestros estudiantes y sus familias. Y los haremos realidad, juntos.
Gracias por permitirme formar parte de esta comunidad junto a todos ustedes. ¡Me entusiasma muchísimo comenzar!
