MLK MS Family Needs Assessment 2023
Dr Martin Luther King Middle School is interested in hearing from families to help guide decisions on the direction of the school and what supports and resources need to be adjusted, changed, or added to the school community . You input is valued and important to helping us improve our school community. Results of this survey will be shared at the next School Site Council Meeting. Dear 6th grade families!
Spring is a great time to get ahead and make appointments for 7th grade immunization requirements.
California law requires that before students enter 7th grade they must show evidence of having received:
- Tdap booster vaccine (usually given at ages 10-12)
- 2nd chicken pox vaccine (Varicella)
- 2nd MMR vaccine (Measles, Mumps and Rubella)
If your student needs these vaccines, or any other vaccine, please contact their doctor or community clinic. Afterwards, please bring in a copy or email a picture of their immunization record to me, Nurse Crystal, at sokolovc@sfusd.edu. Feel free to email me with any questions!
Summer Program: Aim High
Aim High is a summer school program for middle school students in San Francisco and the Bay Area. We focus on academics in the morning with enrichment in the afternoon, from about 9am - 3pm, Monday through Friday. Aim High is no-cost for all students. The program dates this summer are: June 20, 2023 - July 21, 2023. Apply at www.aimhigh.org!

La ley de California requiere que antes de que los estudiantes ingresen al 7° grado, deben mostrar evidencia de haber recibido:
- Vacuna de refuerzo Tdap (generalmente administrada entre los 10 y los 12 años)
- 2ª vacuna contra la varicela (varicela)
- 2ª vacuna MMR (sarampión, paperas y rubéola)

Student Led Conferences will be held from March 06th - March 10th. All students must hold a meeting with their parents/guardians and teachers. 8th Grade students must hold this meeting, otherwise they are unable to attend the graduation ceremony. Your child will be bringing the following scheduling sheet home to schedule a Student led Conference. Please fill out the form and return it to the homeroom teacher.

Dear 6th grade families!
Spring is a great time to get ahead and make appointments for 7th grade immunization requirements.
California law requires that before students enter 7th grade they must show evidence of having received:
- Tdap booster vaccine (usually given at ages 10-12)
- 2nd chicken pox vaccine (Varicella)
- 2nd MMR vaccine (Measles, Mumps and Rubella)
If your student needs these vaccines, or any other vaccine, please contact their doctor or community clinic. Afterwards, please bring in a copy or email a picture of their immunization record to me, Nurse Crystal, at sokolovc@sfusd.edu. Feel free to email me with any questions!
Cell Phones Pouches
We have noticed students not locking their cell phones in their pouches. Please remind your child to lock their cell phones in their pouches while in school.
Here is the phone policy shared with students:
If a phone is seen for any reason (on or off)…
- The phone is confiscated and delivered to Student Support where it will be held for the parent to pick-up at their convenience. There are no reminders.
- The student loses their Cobra Eligibility until a Restoration Plan is completed.
If a Yondr pouch is damaged or missing…
- The phone is confiscated and delivered to Student Support where it will be held for the parent to pick-up at their convenience.
- The student loses their Cobra Eligibility until a Restoration Plan is completed, which will include a $20 fee to replace the damaged or lost pouch.
Student Led Conferences
Student Led Conferences will be held from March 06th - March 10th. All students must hold a meeting with their parents/guardians and teachers. 8th Grade students must hold this meeting, otherwise they are unable to attend the graduation ceremony. Your child will be bringing the following scheduling sheet home to schedule a Student led Conference. Please fill out the form and return it to the homeroom teacher.

There are open two-year positions for Martin Luther King parent/guardians on the English Learners Advisory Committee. Parent/guardian, teacher, and staff members serve a two-year term. (Note: SFUSD employees are not eligible to serve as an ELAC parent representative per the ELAC bylaws.)
ELAC parent/guardian member positions are filled by holding an open election. To be eligible for election as a parent/guardian member you must have a student currently attending MLK. You must also be available to attend regular monthly meetings. MLK MS Main Gate
SFUSD has updated the Main Gate. The Main Gate does not require anyone to unlock for exiting. For entrance, a staff member will have to open the gate. Here is the Main Gate Protocol:
- All visitors should enter from the main gate on Girard Street.
- The main gate will be open in the morning until 10AM.
- After 10AM, in order to enter the campus, please call the school, and we will unlock the gate for entrance

Puerta principal de MLK MS

On Friday, 1/13, during 6th period (2:40PM – 4:00PM) ALL students and staff will be attending our FIRST ANNUAL spotlight on student achievement at MLK. The assembly will shine a light on student achievements from the Fall semester including: athletics, academics (honor roll and principal awards), perfect attendance, King Kids (citizenship), and any arts/talents that students have submitted.

English Learners Advisory Committee
There are open two-year positions for Martin Luther King parent/guardians on the English Learners Advisory Committee. Parent/guardian, teacher, and staff members serve a two-year term. (Note: SFUSD employees are not eligible to serve as an ELAC parent representative per the ELAC bylaws.)
ELAC parent/guardian member positions are filled by holding an open election. To be eligible for election as a parent/guardian member you must have a student currently attending MLK. NEW LAPTOPS for students to use at home and at school!!
Every MLK student will be issued an SFUSD laptop. This will be your student’s district device that they will continue to use through high school. They will return it before they graduate from SFUSD.
Starting Thursday, January 5th we began checking out new laptops to each student. *Students who already have a laptop checked out to them from MLK or a previous school cannot receive a new laptop until they return the old laptop.
The laptop is like a notebook that they can bring to and from school in their backpacks. Students can use the new laptop at home and they can bring the laptop to school to use for class. Reminder: to bring computers fully charged.
*If your child has an old or damaged device they can still return it for a new one. Please return all old devices to the main office with the students name on it. If you have a lost device please report it in writing with the students name and we can issue a new one.

Greetings Parents/ Caregivers of Beacon afterschool participants. Beginning on January 3rd, the start of the spring semester, youth who are not registered in the program will not be able to attend afterschool. Registration is critical for safety and legal reasons. Winter Break will be from 12/19/2022 to 01/02/2023. School resumes Tuesday 01/03/2023. MLK MS wishes everyone a safe and wonderful winter break!
COVID-19 Test Kits For Students
Test Kits were distributed to students this week during homeroom. Each student will receive 2 boxes of tests.
We are requesting that students test on Monday January 03, before returning from winter break. The remaining tests can be for a later time (in case of another surge) or sooner if they are experiencing symptoms.

NEW LAPTOPS for Students to use at home
We are pleased to announce that all MLK students have the opportunity to get a new laptop checked out to them to use at home and school.
On Thursday January 5th, 2023, the district will be at MLK to distribute new laptops to students. Student's must bring back any previously checked out district or school laptops in order to receive a new one.
If students do not turn in their old device, we will not be able to provide a new one.
If your student has not been issued a device in the past, they will be able to receive one.

Distribución de kits de prueba COVID-19 para estudiantes
Los kits de prueba se distribuyeron a los estudiantes esta semana durante el salón de clases. Cada estudiante recibirá 2 cajas de pruebas.
Los kits de prueba son para usar después de las vacaciones de invierno(o antes si tienen síntomas). No se requieren pruebas. Si su hijo da positivo, quédese en casa y llame a la oficina principal.

NUEVAS COMPUTADORAS PORTÁTILES para que los estudiantes las usen en casa
Nos complace anunciar que todos los estudiantes de MLK tienen la oportunidad de obtener una computadora portátil nueva para usar en casa y en la escuela.
El jueves 5 de enero de 2023, el distrito estará en MLK para distribuir nuevas computadoras portátiles a los estudiantes. Los estudiantes deben traer cualquier computadora portátil del distrito o de la escuela prestada previamente para recibir una nueva.
Si los estudiantes no entregan su dispositivo anterior, no podremos proporcionar uno nuevo.
Si su estudiante no ha recibido un dispositivo en el pasado, podrá recibir uno.

- Present/Show art or arts related/integrated projects (finished or in progress)
- Lead live arts making workshops (making zines, buttons, stickers, slime, character drawing, hand lettering, etc.!)
- Gather material for upcoming or ongoing projects (do interviews/surveys, make a podcast or video, take photos, etc.)
- Attend, participate, make art and have fun!

"Shine Bright: Winter Showcase" TALENT SHOW
Families, the following message was sent to students this week:
MLK Cobras,
On Friday, January 13th during 6th period, we will be having an assembly, the "Shine Bright: Winter Showcase", which includes a TALENT SHOW portion. Students can perform their talent live, or submit a video recording of their video to be played at the showcase. Talents can include singing, dancing, playing an instrument, spoken word poetry, a skit, or really anything that showcases a talent that you have. Performances can be you as an individual, or with a group of friends.
Talent performances must be appropriate for school- no profanity, drug references, hateful language, and 5 minutes or less.
To be included as part of the talent show, you must...
- Perform your talent at the audition in the cafeteria after school on Wednesday 12/14. Or, if you are submitting a video of your talent to be played at the talent show, you must email your video to Ms. McManus (McManusE@sfusd.edu) by 4pm on Wednesday 12/14.
- You will be notified by 4pm on Friday 12/16 whether or not you have been selected to perform at the "Shine Bright: Winter Showcase" on Friday, January 13th.
Please practice your performances; not everyone will be selected!
English Learners Advisory Committee
There are open two-year positions for Martin Luther King parent/guardians on the English Learners Advisory Committee. Parent/guardian, teacher, and staff members serve a two-year term. (Note: SFUSD employees are not eligible to serve as an ELAC parent representative per the ELAC bylaws.)
ELAC parent/guardian member positions are filled by holding an open election. To be eligible for election as a parent/guardian member you must have a student currently attending MLK. You must also be available to attend regular monthly meetings. "Shine Bright: Winter Showcase" TALENT SHOW

COVID-19 Test Kits For Students
Test Kits were distributed to students this week during homeroom. Each student will receive 2 boxes of tests.
We are requesting that students test on Sunday November 27, before returning from Fall break. The remaining tests can be for a later time (in case of another surge) or sooner if they are experiencing symptoms.

8th Grade Families: High School Enrollment: Applying to School of the Arts (SOTA)
Hello 8th grade Families.
Did your child tell you about our morning music concert on Friday October, 21st? If they loved it or you know they love the arts, this message is for you!
As high school application time approaches, we want you to know about: School of the Arts at Ruth Asawa. It is a public arts focused high school in San Francisco. It has an admissions process where students need to apply, audition, and for some departments they need to submit samples of their artistic work. The deadline for applications is December 16 and letting youth know about the opportunities there is really important, so they can get excited and get everything ready for their application on time.

The website is available in multiple languages, in the upper right hand corner, in a navy stripe, there is a button that says "SELECT LANGUAGE."

Some departments require that students upload samples of artistic work by the December 16 deadline (those departments include: (Media +Film, Theatre Tech, Architecture + Design, Visual Arts, Creative Writing, and Writing- Spoken Arts).
That there will be auditions on either February 4 or 5, 2023.
That may seem like a lot, but if your child loves arts and creativity, we can support them and you through the process! There is outreach from the school of the arts and our MLKarts teachers are here to help!

I'm reminding everyone that JCYC's After School FREE Tutoring program is available to students! Tutoring will be on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 4 PM to 6 PM and Wednesday 2:15 PM - 5:30 PM in room 117.
We are currently doing $50 grocery GIFT CARD RAFFLES for families who sign up for JCYC by Nov. 16th. Winners will be contacted by Nov. 17th. Three families will be chosen.
For an info refresher, JCYC (Japanese Community Youth Council) is a nonprofit college access program, free to MLK students. We provide FREE tutoring, field trips, high school/college tours, career fairs, scholarships/raffles, and other educational engaging workshops.
Again, this program is completely free and accessible to ALL our students. In order for your student to receive JCYC services this year and to be entered into the raffle, please fill out our JCYC Intake/Needs form here.

Student Led Conferences
Student Led Conferences will be held from November 14th - November 18th. All students must hold a meeting with their parents/guardians and teachers. 8th Grade students must hold this meeting, otherwise they are unable to attend the graduation ceremony. Did your child tell you about our morning music concert on Friday October, 21st? If they loved it or you know they love the arts, this message is for you!
As high school application time approaches, we want you to know about: School of the Arts at Ruth Asawa. It is a public arts focused high school in San Francisco. It has an admissions process where students need to apply, audition, and for some departments they need to submit samples of their artistic work. The deadline for applications is December 16 and letting youth know about the opportunities there is really important, so they can get excited and get everything ready for their application on time.

English Learners Advisory Committee
There are open two-year positions for Martin Luther King parent/guardians on the English Learners Advisory Committee. Parent/guardian, teacher, and staff members serve a two-year term. (Note: SFUSD employees are not eligible to serve as an ELAC parent representative per the ELAC bylaws.)
ELAC parent/guardian member positions are filled by holding an open election. To be eligible for election as a parent/guardian member you must have a student currently attending MLK. You must also be available to attend regular monthly meetings. Student Led Conferences
Student Led Conferences will be held from November 14th - November 18th. All students must hold a meeting with their parents/guardians and teachers. 8th Grade students must hold this meeting, otherwise they are unable to attend the graduation ceremony. Your child will be bringing the following scheduling sheet home to schedule a Student led Conference. Please fill out the form and return it to the homeroom teacher.

Grading Period Ending
The first grading period ends 10/14/2022. The School District will send report cards home the next few weeks.
Student Led Conferences
Student Led Conferences will be held from November 14th - November 18th. Multi Purpose Family Income Form
We are at 60% 68% completion. Please fill out the Multi-Purpose Family Income Form! This form assist with informing the district and the state of California the needs of MLK MS. This form assisted with MLK MS receiving the Community School Grant, adding $250,000 per year for the next five years. We will be sending this form directly to families that have not filled out the form this week. Thank you to all families that attended School Site Council. A quick recap:
- Due to enrollment, our Weighted Student Formula was reduced $23,568.
- English Learners budget was reduced $22,607.
- Targeted Instructional Improvement was reduced by $79.047.
- MLK also received a Community Schools Partnership Grant $225,000, starting this year for separate programming.
- Salesforce has given $100,000 for the annual Principal’s Innovation Fund.
- Money missing from the budget promised during Spring 2022: $161,019.
- Additional discussion on current staffing issues.

- 8th Science teacher
- A Teacher on Special Assignment (TSA) was assigned half time, teaching periods 0, 1, and 2. The teacher will prepare a curriculum for the afternoon sessions.
- 6th Science teacher
- A Teacher on Special Assignment (TSA) was assigned half time. The teacher will start mid-October, teaching periods 0, 1, and 2. The teacher will prepare a curriculum for the afternoon sessions.

New Main Gate Protocol
Due to safety concerns from the community regarding our main gate, there will be a new protocol effective 09/28/2022.
- All visitors should enter from the main gate on Girard Street.
- The main gate will be open in the morning until 10AM.
- After 10AM, in order to enter the campus, please call the school, and we will unlock the gate for entrance.
