Dear MLK Families,

Welcome to the 2025/26 school year at Martin Luther King Jr. Academic Middle School! I’m thrilled to welcome back our returning families and give a huge, warm shout-out to our brand-new 6th grade students and families—your MLK adventure starts now!

For the past two years, I’ve been proud to serve as your Assistant Principal, and in that time I’ve seen the heart, grit, and brilliance that make this school community unlike any other. Now, as I step into the role of Principal, I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and work alongside you to make this our best year yet—driven by a steadfast commitment to excellence, equity, and opportunity for every single student.

I recognize that our families and students hold high expectations for us,  just as we hold high expectations for them. At MLK, this means believing every student can succeed and grow, while providing the support, challenge, and encouragement needed to reach ambitious goals. It means holding ourselves and our students accountable and working together—with families, students, and staff all sharing this responsibility. When expectations are high and support is strong, amazing things happen.  By challenging, supporting, and believing in one another, we will make 2025–2026 a year to remember! 

As we move forward, I have outlined clear expectations for our students, which are essential to our shared success. They are as follows:

Preparing for School

Sleep

Over the summer, your child’s sleeping schedule may have shifted and no longer aligns with our school schedule. If that’s the case, please start getting your child back into a healthy sleeping habit a week before school starts. Middle school students need 8-10 hours of sleep each night. Encourage your students to turn off their devices at 8:00pm, be in bed with a book to read by 9:00pm, and asleep by 10:00pm.

Materials 

We want to teach our students to be responsible, which includes maintaining the materials they need to engage in school. Please make sure your child brings the following to school EVERYDAY. 

• Backpack 
• A binder with paper and dividers
• Pens and pencils
• Charged SFUSD Chromebook when necessary
• Water bottle
• A healthy snack (dried fruit, granola bar, nuts, etc…)
• Athletic shoes and appropriate clothing for PE (dark athletic shorts or sweatpants, light color athletic top), which can be kept in the PE locker, and taken home to wash regularly

Arrive on time

School starts promptly at 9:30am, which means that students should be in their seats, ready to learn BEFORE 9:30am. Missing even 3 minutes means they have missed important information from the teacher. When the bell rings at 9:30am, if a student is not in their seat, they are considered late (tardy). I recommended that students arrive by 9:15am, so they have plenty of time to get to class on time. 

Student Schedule

Student schedules can be seen on ParentVue and StudentVue by Friday, 8/15. Please remind your student to write down their schedule so they will know where to go on the first day of school!

The First Month (8/18-9/12)

During the first week at MLK, students and teachers will work together to build a strong academic culture and set students up for success. This includes establishing classroom and school-wide expectations and routines, reviewing the syllabus (grading policies, homework guidelines, etc.), learning how to use planners, getting to know teachers, becoming familiar with schedules, and practicing student rights. Teachers will guide students through their specific classroom expectations as they learn what it takes to succeed in each subject. Students will also participate in numerous community-building activities, especially during advisory, where they will connect through games, circles, and interactive exercises.

Week two is Spirit Week—a time for relationships to deepen and for students to express their pride as MLK Strong team members. Our Beacon partners will host fun, community-building activities during lunch. We will also hold our first grade-level assemblies, where school expectations will be reviewed, alongside Spring ’25 honor roll awards and celebrations.

Week three will be especially meaningful. Last school year, students collaborated with teachers and administrators to design a week-long series of workshops celebrating culture and strengthening connections among peers and staff. This year, we will continue that tradition with activities focused on fostering a community culture grounded in high academic and behavioral expectations and strong adult-student relationships—so every student can grow to meet those expectations and support each other.

In week four, students will participate in grade-level field trips and enjoy engaging activities during lunch and extended advisory time. Field trip permission forms will be sent home the week prior and must be signed and returned by parents or guardians. Please note that students will not be allowed to leave campus for field trips without a signed permission form.

While these first four weeks focus on relationship and community building through practicing our deeply embedded school expectations, teachers will also begin their academic curriculum, marking the start of an exciting journey to enrich every student with rigorous knowledge and learning.

MLK Electronic Device Policy Reminders

Includes phones, ipads, Smart Watches. and other internet accessible electronic devices.

In order to maintain a rigorous academic and safe environment for all students, MLK is a Device Free School, meaning that all electronic devices must be kept in students backpacks (out of sight) during the duration of the school day (9:30am-4pm). All 6th grade students will be issued a phone pouch. 7th and 8th grade students will use the pouches they were issued last year. All students must keep their phone in their phone pouch during the school day. Any phone, iPad, smartwatch, that is seen during the school day, will be confiscated and held for a parent/guardian to pick up at their convenience. There will be no warnings, and exceptions to this rule, while few and far between, need to be cleared by the MLK administration staff, namely myself and the Assistant Principal only.  If you need to contact your student during the school day, please call the main office at 415-330-1500. Students can request a pass to use the phone in our counseling office when needed. Please do not text or call your student during the school day. We are asking students, parents and guardians to understand that the MLK Device Free School Rule will be rigorously enforced. 

Dress Code

• Clothing, jewelry, and personal items shall be free of obscene, violent, or sexually suggestive images or words, or which promotes the use of alcohol, drugs, tobacco, or other illegal activity.

• Students must have footwear that is safe and appropriate for the activity they are engaging in. 
• Clothes shall be sufficient to conceal undergarments. See-through tops or bare abdomens are prohibited.  Garments exposing the entire thigh or the buttocks are prohibited.

Students in violation of our dress code will be asked to fix the issue. If they cannot fix the issue, parents will be contacted to bring clothing for the student. 

Bikes, scooters, and skateboards

Students that ride to school on a bike, scooter, or skateboard are required to lock their transportation in our bike and scooter rack outside of the cafeteria. Students will not be allowed to store their bikes or skateboards in Room 102 or classrooms. If your student rides a bike please make sure they have a bike lock. Students riding scooters and skateboards will need a padlock to lock onto the scooter rack. Under California Vehicle Code (CVC 21235), helmets are required for children 18 years and under on bikes, non-motorized scooters, skateboards and roller or in-line skates. CVC 21235 further states that for motorized scooters, riders must have a valid drivers license or learners permit to operate a scooter on public roads. Students are not allowed to ride their bike or skateboard on campus. 

Food

• Breakfast and lunch are free for all students
• As was required last year, students will need to enter their meal pin number in order to receive lunch. Students with an email on file will receive an email the week of August 11th from “SFUSD Student Nutrition Services” containing their individual Meal PIN. Students can also scan the barcode on the back of their student ID to receive their meal. 
• Outsourced Food deliveries to MLK are prohibited. We cannot accept food deliveries from services like Uber Eats, DoorDash, etc… Any food deliveries that arrive at MLK will be intercepted and held until the end of the school day. Parents are always welcome to drop food in the main office for their child if needed and we will make sure that your child receives their food.

8/16, Saturday: 6th Grade Family Welcome Day 11am-2pm at MLK.

8/18, Monday: First Day of school. There will be a special orientation assembly for all New-to-MLK students and their families on the first day of school from 9:30am-10:30am in the cafeteria.

9/1, Monday: Labor day- No School.

In Summary

We are starting this school year strong, with an abundance of opportunities and resources for our students, families, and staff! I’m looking forward to greeting students and families on the first day of school, which is Monday, 8/18. School starts at 9:30am, and again, please help your student get into the habit of arriving 15 minutes early every day so they are on time and prepared to start their day as a safe, respectful, responsible King Kid; doing so will help your child succeed at MLK and beyond.

MLK電子產品規範提醒

¡Bienvenidos al año escolar 2025/26 en la Escuela Intermedia Académica Martin Luther King Jr.! Me complace dar la bienvenida a nuestras familias que regresan y dar un cálido saludo a nuestros nuevos estudiantes y familias de 6.º grado. ¡Su aventura en MLK comienza ahora!

Durante los últimos dos años, me he enorgullecido de ser su subdirector, y durante ese tiempo he visto el corazón, la determinación y la brillantez que hacen esta comunidad escolar algo único. Ahora, al asumir el cargo de director, estoy listo para ponerme manos a la obra y trabajar junto a ustedes para que este sea nuestro mejor año hasta la fecha, impulsado por un firme compromiso con la excelencia, la equidad y las oportunidades para cada estudiante.

Reconozco que nuestras familias y estudiantes tienen grandes expectativas para nosotros, al igual que nosotros las tenemos para ellos. En MLK, esto significa creer que cada estudiante puede tener éxito y crecer, a la vez que les brindamos el apoyo, el reto y el ánimo necesarios para alcanzar metas ambiciosas. Preparándose para la Escuela

Sueño

Durante el verano, es posible que el horario de sueño de su hijo haya cambiado y ya no coincida con el horario escolar. En ese caso, por favor, comience a ayudarle a retomar un hábito de sueño saludable una semana antes del inicio de clases. Los estudiantes de secundaria necesitan dormir de 8 a 10 horas cada noche. Anime a sus estudiantes a apagar sus dispositivos a las 8:00 p. m., acostarse con un libro para leer a las 9:00 p. m. y a dormirse a las 10:00 p. m.

Materiales

Llegar puntualmente

Las clases empiezan puntualmente a las 9:30 a. m., lo que significa que los estudiantes deben estar en sus asientos, listos para aprender ANTES de las 9:30 a. m. Si faltan incluso 3 minutos, se perderán información importante del profesor. Cuando suena el timbre a las 9:30 a. m., si un estudiante no está en su asiento, se considera que llegó tarde. Recomiendo que los estudiantes lleguen antes de las 9:15 a. m. para que tengan tiempo de sobra para llegar a clase a tiempo.

Horario del estudiante

El Primer Mes (18/8-12/9)

Durante la primera semana en MLK, estudiantes y maestros trabajarán juntos para construir una cultura académica sólida y preparar a los estudiantes para el éxito. Esto incluye establecer expectativas y rutinas para el aula y la escuela, revisar el programa de estudios (políticas de calificación, pautas para las tareas, etc.), aprender a usar las agendas, conocer a los maestros, familiarizarse con los horarios y ejercer los derechos de los estudiantes. La segunda semana es la Semana del Espíritu Escolar, un momento para fortalecer las relaciones y para que los estudiantes expresen su orgullo como miembros del equipo MLK Fuerte. Nuestros socios de Beacon organizarán actividades divertidas para fomentar la comunidad durante el almuerzo. También celebraremos las asambleas de la primera etapa, donde se revisarán las expectativas escolares, junto con la entrega de premios y celebraciones del cuadro de honor de primavera de 2025.

La tercera semana será especialmente significativa. El año pasado, los estudiantes colaboraron con maestros y administradores para diseñar una serie de talleres de una semana de duración que celebraron la cultura y fortalecieron las conexiones entre compañeros y personal. Este año, continuaremos esa tradición con actividades enfocadas en fomentar una cultura comunitaria basada en altas expectativas académicas y de comportamiento, y en sólidas relaciones entre adultos y estudiantes, para que cada estudiante pueda crecer, cumplir con esas expectativas y apoyar se.

La cuarta semana, los estudiantes participarán en excursiones escolares según su grado y disfrutarán de actividades interesantes durante el almuerzo y el tiempo de orientación adicional. Los formularios de permiso para las excursiones se enviarán a casa la semana anterior y deberán ser firmados y devueltos por los padres o tutores. Tenga en cuenta que los estudiantes no podrán salir de la escuela para las excursiones escolares sin un formulario de permiso firmado.

Estas primeras cuatro semanas se centran en el desarrollo de relaciones y la comunidad mediante la práctica de nuestras expectativas escolares, los maestros también comenzarán su currículo académico, lo que marca el inicio de un emocionante camino para enriquecer a cada estudiante con conocimientos y aprendizaje rigurosos e mutuamente.

Recordatorios de la política de dispositivos electrónicos de MLK

Código de vestimento

Bicicletas, patinetas y patinetas

No se permite guardar bicicletas ni patinetas en el aula 102 ni en las aulas. Si su estudiante usa bicicleta, asegúrese de que tenga un candado. Comida

• El desayuno y el almuerzo son gratuitos para todos los estudiantes.

• Como se requirió el año pasado, los estudiantes deberán ingresar su número PIN de comida para recibir el almuerzo. Los estudiantes con un correo electrónico registrado recibirán un correo electrónico la semana del 11 de agosto de "Servicios de Nutrición Estudiantil del SFUSD" con su PIN de comida individual. Los estudiantes también pueden escanear el código de barras al reverso de su identificación estudiantil para recibir su comida.

• Se prohíbe la entrega de alimentos a MLK por parte de terceros. No podemos aceptar entregas de comida de servicios como Uber Eats, DoorDash, etc. Cualquier entrega de comida que llegue a MLK será interceptada y retenida hasta el final de la jornada escolar. Los padres siempre pueden dejar comida en la oficina principal para sus hijos si es necesario y nos aseguraremos de que la reciban.

• 16/8, sábado: Día de bienvenida a las familias de 6.º grado, de 11:00 a. m. a 2:00 p. m. en MLK.

• 18/8, lunes: Primer día de clases. Habrá una asamblea de orientación especial para todos los estudiantes nuevos en MLK y sus familias el primer día de clases, de 9:30 a. m. a 10:30 a. m. en la cafetería.

• 1/9, lunes: Día del Trabajo - No hay clases.

En resumen: 

Comenzamos este año escolar con fuerza, con una gran cantidad de oportunidades y recursos para nuestros estudiantes, familias y personal! Espero con ansias recibir a los estudiantes y familias el primer día de clases, que es el lunes 18/8. Las clases comienzan a las 9:30 a. m. y, nuevamente, por favor, ayude a su estudiante a acostumbrarse a llegar 15 minutos antes todos los días para que sea puntual y esté preparado para comenzar su día como un niño King sano, respetuoso y responsable. Hacerlo ayudará a su hijo a tener éxito en MLK y más allá.
