Emailed to Burton families, students and staff on Dec. 2, 2025:

Dear Burton Community:

I hope you are all finding some time to rest and take good care. Today was a stressful day, and I want to once again thank our amazing staff and students for your patience, cooperation, and care.

As we shared earlier, shortly after 12:00 p.m. a student was injured in an incident involving a firearm and was taken to the hospital. We are relieved to report that they are expected to be okay.

The San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) responded immediately, and our school implemented a secure protocol, meaning the exterior perimeter of campus was secured to ensure safety. The incident remains under investigation by SFPD, and they have assured us that this appears to be an isolated situation with no ongoing threat to our school community. School will be open and have regular operations tomorrow.

In any school emergency, we communicate with families through multiple channels, including text messages, auto-dials, and email. Please take a moment to ensure your emergency contact information is current and that you are subscribed to receive notifications so you can receive important updates from us.

We know that today’s events may bring up a range of emotions. Please remember that we are here to support you. Our Wellness Center is available for anyone who would like to talk or needs additional support, and we will have extra wellness resources available throughout the week.

We are incredibly proud of our students for remaining calm and following directions, and we are deeply grateful to our dedicated staff for their quick and thoughtful response.

This remains an active investigation. Anyone who may have information is encouraged to contact SFPD at 415-575-4444 or text a tip to TIP411 with the message beginning with SFPD.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership in keeping our school community safe.

With appreciation,

Principal Thomas
