Your help makes Sunset a place where our students, families and staff thrive.
The Families of Sunset PTA welcomes all families to join us in supporting our children and our school. There are lots of ways to get involved at Sunset: join the PTA, join the School Site Council or English Learner Advisory Committee, volunteer in the classroom, or help with our many school, community and fundraising events.
Join the Sunset Elementary PTA
Please join the community and connect with teachers, families and students! Becoming a member does not obligate you to volunteer or attend monthly meetings. Get involved in any way that you find enjoyable.
The Sunset PTA is passionate about bringing the community together and creating shared experiences. The PTA organizes and sponsors events such as the Sunset Gala, Spring Carnival, Talent Show, School-wide Picnics, Garden Days, and the Book Fair.
The PTA helps Sunset extend our students’ education by funding library books, garden improvements, school beautification projects, and all kinds of equipment; events like Teacher Appreciation Week, which celebrate our teachers and other school staff; grants to teachers for special projects; and more.

SFUSD Second District PTA
SFUSD has a PTA too! The Second District of the California State PTA offers support to our PTA, holds district-wide events, and is a great resource for all SFUSD families. For more information and updates on events check their website often. The Second District, in turn, is supported by the California State PTA, which is part of the National PTA.
There are so many ways to help!
Do you like the big picture? Join the School Site Council to help with the Balanced Scorecard, budget, and decisions made about school programs.
Are you available during the day? Volunteer in the classroom, library, office, cafeteria, yard, or on field trips.
Do you like having fun? Come help at school activities, events, and fundraising efforts.
You'll see opportunities to join in and help out in the weekly news and ParentSquare throughout the year, but we're happy to help you be proactive! Email email@example.com if you'd like to figure out how to best help our school thrive!
Some committees you can join:
Annual Giving – Great programs require great support! Annual Giving is a major source of fundraising for all of the great programs that our children enjoy at Sunset.
Outreach – Do you speak Cantonese or another language? Do you want to serve as a parent liaison? This committee works to provide language support for parents, room parents, and teachers. Outreach Purpose Statement
Library – Our school library is a bustling hive of activity on class visit days and we can use your help to keep it running smoothly. Help out the teachers with your child’s class visit or other class visits for the week. Returned books can pile up quickly and even a few minutes of shelving can help keep up with the intake. If you cannot help out in the library there are other ways to help out in the comfort of your home. Please sign up and we will contact you to find out what works best with your schedule.
Grant Writing – The purpose of this committee is to secure additional funding for our school through investigating potential grants and writing effective proposals for appropriate grants.
Sunset Gala – This evening fundraiser consists of a silent and live auction, raffle, food and entertainment. We need a lot of help throughout the fall to ensure a successful gala!
Carnival – The Spring Carnival is an afternoon of activities and feasting! This is a merrymaking FUN family event run in parallel with the PTA’s final fundraiser of the school year – the Spring Raffle. Volunteers are needed for the cake walk, bake sale, classroom game booths, food truck/booth, bounce house, and prize table.
Yearbook – Help design the yearbook! Take photos throughout the year in the classroom, on field trips, and at school events — or use photos submitted by others to create yearbook pages online from home. A super fun and creative project with a priceless end result treasured by the kids!
Garden – Three times a year we help beautify the school gardens during Sunset Elementary’s Garden Days. The Green Schoolyard committee is a team of parent and grandparent volunteers who help maintain our school's green spaces. Please consider coming to all garden days and/or joining the Green Schoolyard Committee. No prior experience required, and no time commitment too short.
