SFUSD School Counseling Internship Program: Mentor Counselor
SFUSD School Counseling Internship Program
SFUSD’s Office of Counseling and Postsecondary Success partners with universities and site based programs to support the growth and development of rising school counselors pursuing PPS (Pupil Personnel Services) credential. As part of the PPS credentialing requirement, school counseling interns work alongside experienced site-based school counselors with a commitment to serve for 1 academic school year. The Office of Counseling and Postsecondary coordinates this process by screening intern candidates. This includes:
- an info/interview session
- checking references
- providing professional development.
Once candidates have attended the info/interview session and have had their references checked, CPSS connects them to school sites for interviews and they engage in a reciprocal matching process.
For site based counselors who volunteer to serve as mentors, we provide a workshop covering:
- requirements
- the placement process
- supervision best practices
to ensure that optimal learning environments are created for school counseling interns. Mentor counselors must attend a Mentor PLC and new mentors must participate in a supervision webinar and complete a quiz. Additionally, it is a requirement for both interns and mentors to attend a Fall Intern/Mentor Workshop which is a space for collaboration and networking.
