The new California Media Literacy Bill, AB 873, requires all students to learn media literacy skills in language arts, science, math and history-social studies. Media literacy instruction will include giving students the skills of recognizing misinformation. In a recent issue of Cal Matters Assemblymember Marc Berman says, “I’ve seen the impact that misinformation has had in the real world - how it affects the way people vote, whether they accept outcomes of elections, try to overthrow our democracy… This is about making sure our young people have the skills to navigate this landscape,” said the bill’s sponsor.
