Announcement Message

As we shared with you last week, SFUSD’s Academic Calendar Committee has recommended that the 2025-26 school year be extended by five days.

Please note that this decision is not final until it is approved by the Board of Education and California Department of Education (CDE). As of March 11, 2026, this proposal has not been approved by either the Board or CDE.

The Academic Calendar Committee will meet again on Friday, March 13, 2026 to consider alternate proposals for SFUSD to make up the missed instructional days due to the strike.

We recognize the impact this uncertainty has on students, families, and staff. We will keep you informed of any updates regarding this matter. Please see below for more information.

What is the Academic Calendar Oversight Committee?

The Academic Calendar Oversight Committee is led by the Office of Labor Relations, and includes representation from Labor Relations, divisions of Curriculum & Instruction (C&I), Student & Family Services Division (SFSD), Special Education (SpEd); and also includes United Educators of San Francisco (UESF), United Administrators of San Francisco (UASF), and SEIU Local 1021.

What is the process for getting changes to the academic calendar approved?

The academic calendar has two components and two different committees. There is a larger group that meets to collectively provide feedback, input and recommendations to the district leadership team. This would be the committee for students, families, and community partners to participate in and provide their recommended changes.

The second committee is a much smaller group of stakeholders which consist of our labor partners and district departments that negotiate the labor partner’s work calendar. If any changes are being requested at this committee, they’re typically tied to the labor partner’s collective bargaining agreement.

What other proposals are being considered to make up for the missed instruction?

The smaller oversight committee will work collectively to identify all potential solutions that will add the 5 missed instructional days. The committee can look at a combination of how we implement those days. For example, 2-3 days this year and the remaining 2-3 days next year, or add the 5 days over the next 2 years. The committee will identify three options to present to the superintendent and Board of Education for consideration.

What can families expect?

Once changes are adopted by the Board, we will share more information about any impacts to summer programming, end of year activities, or beginning of year activities.
