Medical / Vision Coverage
- You may continue your current group coverage at the same benefit level through The P&A Group (COBRA Administrator) by paying the COBRA rate (employer’s full cost + administrative fee). You should receive the COBRA notification packet from The P&A Group within 45 days after your termination date. Separately, you will receive information from WageWorks for enrollment on the COBRA dental plan. If you have not received both packets within 45 days of your resignation date, please contact the P&A Group for further assistance. For more detailed information regarding COBRA rates click here.
- You may convert your current GROUP health coverage to INDIVIDUAL coverage. If you wish to convert to individual coverage, contact the health plan carrier directly within 30 days of your employment separation date. Please note that if you are converting to another health plan, your application is subject to underwriting for insurability. *The district does not administer individual health plans and cannot advise on plan types, rates, etc.
- If you are over the age of 65, you will be eligible to enroll in Medicare A and B. Medicare is the federal health insurance plan. Please contact your local Social Security Administration (SSA) office or visit www.medicare.gov for additional information and enrollment instructions. *The district does not administer Medicare.
- You can purchase coverage through CoveredCA. You can get quotes, shop plans online, and submit an application from the convenience of your own home. If you need additional assistance with finding the right health plan at an affordable rate, call to speak with a certified health insurance agent: 1-877-752-4737. For more information click here.
If you do not receive your COBRA coverage election within 45 days, contact P&A GROUPS directly. As stated in the Health Service System Benefits Information and Enrollment Guide, they can provide you a certificate that will show evidence of prior health coverage. This certificate of prior coverage may assist the employee and/or dependents to purchase new health coverage that excludes pre-existing conditions. The health plan carrier will also send you a similar “termination of coverage” letter.
Alternatives for Health Coverage
You should consider all options you may have to get other health coverage before you make your decision. There may be more affordable or more generous coverage options for you and your family through other group health plan coverage (such as a spouse's plan), the Health Insurance Marketplace, or Medicaid.
Losing your job-based coverage is also a special enrollment event in the Health Insurance Marketplace (Marketplace). The Marketplace offers "one-stop shopping" to find and compare private health insurance options. In the Marketplace, you could be eligible for a tax credit that lowers your monthly premiums and cost-sharing reductions (amounts that lower your out-of pocket costs for deductibles, coinsurance and copayments), and you can see what your premium, deductibles, and out-of-pocket costs will be before you make a decision to enroll. Eligibility for COBRA continuation coverage won't limit your eligibility for Marketplace coverage or for a tax credit. Please note that the SFUSD Benefits team does not advise employees on this matter upon separation.
Pension
CalSTRS: If you participated in the CalSTRS pension program for less than 5 years, you may request a refund of the employee contribution by contacting CalSTRS directly. If you take no action or were participating in CalSTRS for 5+ years, you are now vested. If you take employment in another California Public School District, you will continue membership with CalSTRS in that school District. We recommend visiting www.calstrs.com for contact information, forms, etc.
SFERS: If you participated in the SFERS pension program for less than 5 years, you may request a refund of the employee contribution only by contacting SFERS directly. If you accept employment at another City and County of San Francisco department and take no action, your pension may continue with that department; please check with your hiring department for confirmation. If you are hired at a California public agency that participates in the CalPERS pension system ,or a reciprocal retirement system within six (6) months of your District separation, you may be eligible for reciprocity. We recommend visiting www.mysfers.org for more information on requesting a refund, reciprocity and eligibility in your new City and County of SF position.
