Health and Standards-Based Report Cards

Report Card Standards by Grade

Please see below to learn about the health standards SFUSD assesses in each grade (drawn from the California Health Education Standards).

Kindergarten

  • Identifies and practices basic hygiene
  • Understands and applies basic safety concepts
  • Identifies and chooses healthy foods and activities

First Grade

  • Describes how humans and other living things grow and names major body parts
  • Explains and applies ways to stay healthy (oral & personal hygiene practices; sun safety; prevention of disease & germ transmission - hand washing, covering coughs & sneezes)
  • Identifies and explains safe and unsafe practices (identifying labels on products; distinguishing safe & unsafe touches and using refusal skills; explaining use of seat belt & sitting in back seat of vehicle; defining conflict resolution techniques)

Second Grade

  • Identifies and chooses healthy foods according to MyPlate recommendations
  • Distinguishes between helpful and harmful substances, and makes healthy choices accordingly (medicines, drugs, & household products)
  • Knows and practices healthy behaviors to promote mental wellness (describes & manages various emotions; talks with parents/trusted adult about feelings; lists expressions of affection, love, friendship, & concern; identifies ways of dealing with stress)

Third Grade

  • Explains and practices positive peer and family relationships (shows respect, gets along with, communicates, helps others)
  • Identifies and demonstrates health practices that reduce illness and disease caused by bacteria and viruses (hand washing, covering sneezes and coughs, eating healthy, physical activity, rest/sleep)
  • Recognizes and demonstrates respect for individual differences in growth and development

Fourth Grade

  • Describes how to use a decision making process to select nutritious foods, beverages, and physical activities
  • Describes the types and effects of bullying and harassment behaviors and demonstrates how to be an ally
  • Describes the effects of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, and strategies to avoid substance abuse

Fifth Grade

  • Explains viruses (including HIV) and bacteria, and their relationship to the immune system; practices health-enhancing behaviors (for example, covers coughs and sneezes, avoids contact with others’ bodily fluids)
  • Explains internal (biological signals) and external influences (media, peers, family, culture) that affect food choices and physical activity and accesses valid information (nutrition facts, other credible references)
  • Explains the structures and functions of major organs in the human reproductive system (including the social, emotional, and physical changes that occur during puberty)
