SFUSD School Counseling Intern Placement Procedures

Intern Candidates New to SFUSD

If you have not previously held a school counseling internship with SFUSD, you will need to complete the below steps in order to be considered for placement:

  • Attend one of the Information/Interview sessions. You may sign up using the links on the Placement Procedures doc.
  • Upon screening approval, you will be connected to school sites and supervisors will set up virtual meetings/phone interviews. You will  go through a reciprocal matching process for placement.
  • A confirmation email will be sent to you once a placement has been determined.
  • Required trainings to attend: Fall Intern Institute,  Fall Intern/Mentor Meetings, + Spring Intern Institute + 2 PD sessions (TBD)
  • Fingerprinting, TB clearance and proof of malpractice insurance also required (once placement is confirmed).
  • If you are reaching out to SFUSD sites on your own, please refer prospective mentor counselors back to our department so that we can assist them through the SFUSD mentor requirements.

Returning SFUSD Interns

If you plan on securing a 2nd year placement within SFUSD, please note the basic requirements and procedures outlined below:

  • The Student Family Services Division  is currently in the process of identifying our pool of mentors for the 24-25 school year.
  • CPSS will assist you in setting up interviews with sites. Interviews will be done virtually/or by phone.
  • If you are reaching out to SFUSD sites on your own, please refer prospective mentor counselors back to our department so that we can assist them through the SFUSD mentor requirements.
  • You must attend an Informational/Interview session and participate as part of a panel.
  • Please select one of the dates below and sign-up for your session on Eventbrite (links provided below). This event will take place via Zoom (links to join Zoom session included below).
  • Interviews at school sites will be set up and you will participate in a reciprocal matching process.
  • After your interview cycle, a confirmation email will be sent to you once a placement has been determined.
  • Required trainings to attend: Fall Intern/Mentor Workshop + 2 additional PD sessions (TBD)
  • Proof of fingerprint clearance (returning  interns will not be required to be re-fingerprinted/TB tested)
  • Updated malpractice insurance required (you need to provide an update)

All Candidates: You will receive a Google folder for all required documentation submissions and our team will process your MOU once a placement has been secured. A MOU for every individual, approved by BOE is required.
