William Stuart Wagener

William "Bill" Stuart Wagener was a member of the Spring Class of 1947 of Abraham Lincoln High School in San Francisco.

        Bill was born on December 20, 1929, to William and Belle Center (Hendry) Wagener, in San Francisco, California. His father was born on February 13, 1997, in California, and died on November 3, 1966, in San Francisco. His mother, Belle, was born on June 14, 1898, in California and died on March 13, 1979, in San Francisco.

        He had an older sister, Marian Murry Wagener, who graduated from Abraham Lincoln in the Spring Class of 1945. She never married.

        He entered Parkside Grammar School as a kindergartner and went through the eighth grade. While in elementary school, he became a member of the Cub Scouts, Pack 85. Upon graduation from Parkside, Bill entered the ninth grade at Abraham Lincoln High School during the Fall 1943.

        At Lincoln, he became active in various school activities: i.e., student government, Hi-Y, and the Drama Club.

        Bill was elected President of the Spring Class of 1947. Such social activities as the Senior Prom, High Senior Dance, Senior picnic and breakfast took place during his term of office. Bill graduated with the Twelfth Commencement Class of Abraham Lincoln High School on June 18, 1947.

        The 1946-1947 Roundup states the following about William Wagener: " . . . in Hi-Y . . . would be happy as an entertainer." His activities outside high school included membership in the California Chapter, Order of DeMolay.

        Bill entered City College of San Francisco immediately after graduation and later pledged to the to the Tri-Epsilon (Tri-E) fraternity. Following City College He took employment with the Pacific Telephone Company. Bill enlisted in a Naval Air Reserve Unit in Alameda, California, and was subsequently activated, as an aviation ordnanceman, with the unit when the Korean War started in June 1950.

        The unit was later assigned to the Alaskan Command to perform patrol and reconnaissance duty in the Aleutian Islands and Bering Sea Area. On August 12, 1951, while on patrol near the Aleutian Islands, his aircraft crashed and he, as well as the crew, were killed.

        His remains were returned from the Bremerton Naval Hospital, Bremerton, Washington, and subsequently interred at the Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno, San Mateo County, California, on August 27, 1951, in Section R, Grave #2731.
