With Halloween only days away, we wanted to share some safety tips from safekids.org and the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) so your family can have a fun and safe Halloween this year:

General safety tips while trick-or-treating:

  • Carry glow sticks or flashlights, use reflective tape or stickers on costumes and bags, and wear light colors to help kids see and be seen by drivers
  • Join kids under age 12 for trick-or-treating
  • Slow down and be alert! Kids are excited on Halloween and may dart into the street. Turn on headlights early in the day to spot kids from further away
  • Remind kids to cross the street at corners or crosswalks
  • When selecting a costume, make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls
  • Choose face paint over costume masks when possible. Masks can limit children’s vision

Protect your family from COVID-19 while trick-or-treating:

  • Outdoor activities, such as trick-or-treating, are much safer than indoors

  • Wash your hands before and after Halloween activities

  • Bring hand sanitizer while trick-or-treating

  • Limit outdoor crowds especially for unvaccinated children

  • Monitor your health and stay home if you feel sick

  • Continue to make safer choices: Consider wearing a face mask in private indoor settings, especially where the vaccination status of those present is unknown

Follow these tips to enjoy a happy and safe Halloween with your family!
