The San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) encourages all families to take simple measures to protect themselves and others against COVID-19 and influenza (flu):
Get your booster and flu shot
Get the COVID-19 bivalent booster and flu vaccine for maximum protection.
See a doctor if you get sick
If you get sick, see a doctor.
Please note: parents and caregivers are not required to provide doctor’s notes to clear their children for return to school due to respiratory infections.
Keep COVID tests on hand
Using COVID-19 rapid test kits can help prevent and manage illness while reducing the spread of viruses to loved ones and others.
People with insurance are able to get at-home tests for free or be reimbursed. Check your insurance company’s website to see how to get tests by pickup or reimbursement.

Wear a mask in crowded, indoor spaces
Keep a well-fitted mask on hand for crowded, indoor spaces (N95, KN95, KF94 are best).
Masks are good to wear as protection against getting or spreading COVID whenever:
- Community spread is high, like during surges
- You, or someone you live with or spend time with, is at risk of severe illness or death
- You feel at risk
Masks help stop the spread of the virus. They protect individuals, the medically vulnerable, and those unable to get vaccinated, like young children.
Wearing a well-fitted mask, getting vaccinated, and avoiding crowded indoors spaces can help prevent people from getting very sick or dying. These tools can also lower the risk of long COVID.
They are the safest choice in indoor public settings and in crowded or poorly ventilated spaces.
People may choose to wear masks, even when they are not required. Respect the choices others make for their health.
