Announcement Message

Dear SFUSD Community,

I am reaching out to share an update, knowing that many of our students, families, and staff are feeling anxious about reports of potential increased federal immigration enforcement activity in San Francisco. SFUSD schools are open and will continue to be welcoming spaces for every student. We remain deeply committed to supporting all families, regardless of immigration status. Being in school is the best way for your student to learn, access essential services like meals, and be in the care of trusted adults.

Today, in my meetings with school principals, district and community leaders, and city officials, I heard loud and clear that it is critical for us to work together. With that in mind, we will share daily updates and clear guidance with our school leaders and staff and continue to provide resources on what to do if Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity is observed near, around, or on school property. Our goal is to keep everyone safe on our campuses while making sure our community has accurate information and trusted resources.

Mayor Daniel Lurie issued an Executive Directive to ensure that San Francisco continues its long-standing commitment to protecting and supporting our immigrant communities. The City is coordinating across departments to maintain public safety, keep communication clear, and make sure that everyone in our city feels safe, respected, and informed.

To help your family stay informed and prepared, here are some useful resources:

A few key reminders for families:

  • If you or someone you know is detained, call the Rapid Response Network at (415) 200-1548.
  • Make a childcare plan in advance with a trusted adult who has legal authorization to be in the U.S.
  • Keep the phone number of an immigration attorney you trust. There are organizations that offer low-cost or free legal support.

Our district’s message is simple and clear: every student belongs at SFUSD, and we are here to support you. We will continue to share updates and resources as we receive them.

Thank you for your continued partnership and for the care you show to one another. Together, we will ensure our schools remain welcoming and strong communities for every child and family.

With care and solidarity,

Dr. Maria Su

SFUSD Superintendent
