Announcement Message
Dear SFUSD Community,
As we reopened our doors to all 49,000 students across San Francisco today, I want to take a moment to reflect.
SFUSD’s mission remains the same– every day, we provide each and every student the quality instruction and equitable support required for them to thrive in the 21st century. Our students are at the center of our work, and they are the reason why we continue to strive toward stability. I had the opportunity to welcome students at Vis Valley Elementary School back to school this morning. I saw joy and laughter on the playground and in the hallways. Teachers and educators hugging students as they reconnect at the front door.
This is what resilience and community looks like. My experience today was such a powerful reminder– what unites us is far stronger than what divides us. As a community, we believe in the value of public education and are deeply committed to our students’ success.
As a school district, we face complex problems that are not unique to San Francisco. In fact, what we experienced is similar to other school districts throughout California. It is no secret that the last few weeks were exceptionally challenging. However, I also saw what is possible when people come together to champion solutions with an eye to the future.
We can find a path forward. In order to do so, our community must find common ground and heal. By working together, we can forge a future rooted in care and support for our students.
The relationships at our school sites and across the city serve as our greatest asset. Whether you are a student, parent, educator, administrator or staff– you are a critical part of our community, and we greatly appreciate your contribution.
I hope we can continue to dialogue with one another, extend grace and respect, and embrace the diversity that makes SFUSD special.
Sincerely,
Dr. Maria Su
SFUSD Superintendent
