Staff recommends that the Board of Education approves a revision to the 2025-26 academic calendar to add five instructional days, resulting in a new last day of school of June 10, 2026. The Board will vote on the revised academic calendar at its meeting on Tuesday, March 24, 2026.
This recommendation is in response to the loss of five instructional days from February 9-13, 2026 due to the United Educators of San Francisco (UESF) strike. Following the strike settlement, the district and its labor partners agreed to meet and confer regarding how to address the lost instructional time. Per SFUSD’s labor agreements, the Academic Calendar Oversight Committee, which includes representatives from UESF, United Administrators of San Francisco (UASF), and SEIU Local 1021, convened to review available options.
The committee considered several options, including the option to distribute the five days across the current and subsequent school years. Two primary options were ultimately advanced: adding five instructional days to the end of the 2025-26 school year, or spreading the days over three school years.
Labor partner positions varied. UESF and SEIU Local 1021 proposed adding five instructional days to the end of the current school year, while UASF proposed an alternative for distributing the days over three academic years. District departments also reviewed both options and identified impacts to summer programming and operational planning under either scenario.
Two out of our three labor partner committee members recommend adding five instructional days to the 2025-26 school year. This approach, supported by the majority of the Committee, ensures that students receive their full instructional time without delay, minimize sfinancial impact to the District, limits disruption to a single school year, and provides clarity so that students, families, and staff can plan for Summer 2026.
The student calendar is a mandatory subject of bargaining under California law, and any changes must be negotiated with and ratified by the district’s bargaining units. The proposed calendar reflects the outcome of that process and is presented for the Board’s consideration.
