Announcement Message

Under California state law, if a school employee is aware that a pupil’s parent or guardian is not available to care for the pupil due to an unplanned family separation, the school shall first exhaust the parent’s instructions for the pupil’s care as outlined in the Emergency Card, and will not contact Child Protective Services unless they are unable to arrange for care through the use of emergency contact information or other information or instructions provided by the parent or guardian. (CA Education Code 234.7)

Update Emergency Card and Contact Information:  Parents are therefore encouraged to regularly update their own contact information as well their emergency contacts at their school site or on ParentVUE (Parent/Guardian Contacts and Emergency Cards) as necessary to ensure family safety in the event of unplanned separation, including secondary and additional contact information for people the parent/guardian has designated to care for the child in the event of unplanned separation.

Caregiver Affidavit: In addition, school sites and parents/guardians should be aware that a Caregiver Affidavit can be completed by an adult caregiver (18 or older) who has the pupil living with them, including in circumstances where there is an unplanned family separation.  By filling out the Caregiver Affidavit, the caregiver is authorized to enroll the pupil in school and to consent to school-related medical care on behalf of the pupil.
