Dear SFUSD Community:
I’m very happy to share that on Tuesday, May 12, 2026 the San Francisco Board of Education unanimously approved John Davis as SFUSD’s next Deputy Superintendent of Educational Services.
This is an incredibly important role in our district. John will help lead our work alongside families, students, educators, and school leaders to make sure every child in SFUSD feels supported, challenged, and inspired at school. Together, we will continue focusing on our student learning goals: improving third grade literacy, eighth grade math, and college and career readiness.
Throughout this search, we wanted our community’s voice at the center. Families, educators, principals, labor partners, and Board members all spent time meeting candidates, asking hard questions, and sharing thoughtful feedback. I’m grateful for the care so many people brought to this process.
John brings more than 30 years of experience serving students and school communities. He has led large urban school systems in Baltimore and Washington, D.C., always with a focus on improving outcomes for young people and supporting the adults who serve them. Most recently, he helped lead early literacy efforts in Baltimore that resulted in meaningful gains for students in the early grades.
Beyond his experience and accomplishments, what stood out to me most is how grounded he is in relationships. John started his career as a middle school math teacher. He founded a high school in Baltimore and also taught and led a school in Kenya. John officially begins on July 1, and I know many of you will have opportunities to meet him in the months ahead.
Please join me in welcoming John Davis to San Francisco and to the SFUSD community.
Sincerely,
Dr. Maria Su
SFUSD Superintendent
