Announcement Message
Dear SFUSD Community:
As we reach the end of another school year, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for all the ways you support our students and schools each day. Whether you are a student, family member, caregiver, educator, or staff member, your contributions help make SFUSD a vibrant and caring community. Thank you for being a part of our shared commitment to serving each and every student who comes through our doors. I also want to extend a congratulations to the graduating seniors in the class of 2026!
Today I’m writing to share an update on budget planning and development for the 2026-27 school year.
This year, I’m grateful to have joined a coalition of California superintendents in advocating for additional funding for school districts. These efforts, in conjunction with similar advocacy from parents, labor, and elected school board leaders, have paid off. The Governor’s May Revision of the 2026-27 state budget includes several positive investments in California’s public schools. While there is still more to do, these proposals would provide additional resources to support student learning, strengthen educational programs, and help school districts meet the needs of students and staff if implemented into the State’s Enacted Budget this summer.
Each year, SFUSD is required to submit a Board of Education-approved budget to the State of California by July 1. Before doing so, we update the community through a series of public meetings, including the first and second readings of the proposed budget which will be held on June 9 and June 23, respectively.
On June 9, we will present an overview of our Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP), which outlines how we are aligning resources and investments with the strategies and priorities that support student success. Together, the budget and LCAP reflect our commitment to using available resources thoughtfully and strategically to improve outcomes for all students, particularly around third grade literacy, eighth grade math, and college and career readiness.
As we continue our commitment to fiscal responsibility, SFUSD has made significant improvements to its budget outlook and is on track to achieve a positive certification. Through careful planning and strategic decision-making, we have strengthened our financial position while maintaining our focus on supporting students and schools.
As part of our commitment to supporting students, staff, and the long-term stability of our schools, we are planning targeted investments that strengthen services, support our workforce, and help SFUSD navigate an evolving funding landscape.
These investments include:
- Funding new state requirements that provide eligible employees with up to 14 weeks of paid pregnancy leave beginning in the 2026-27 school year, helping SFUSD continue to support the well-being of our staff and their families.
- Setting aside resources to help protect students and schools from potential federal funding disruptions. This proactive approach will help ensure continuity of programs and services amid uncertainty related to changes at the federal level.
-
Investing in strategies that directly benefit students and staff, including:
- Efforts to improve student attendance and reduce chronic absenteeism.
- Additional support to improve outcomes for student groups that have historically faced barriers to success.
- Expanded professional development opportunities for teachers and school leaders.
- Recruitment and retention initiatives designed to attract and retain outstanding educators.
- Development of career pathways that encourage and prepare future Special Education and Multilingual educators.
Together, these investments reflect SFUSD’s commitment to creating supportive learning environments, strengthening our workforce, and ensuring that every student has access to the opportunities and resources they need to thrive.
Sincerely,
Dr. Maria Su
SFUSD Superintendent
