Key Improvements to Content Filtering on Student Chromebooks
In its commitment to continuous improvement for the student learning experience, the Department of Technology (DoT) has enacted the following changes to the Securly content filter on student Chromebooks:
- Chromebook content is now filtered by grade-level band: Because content that may be inappropriate for first graders may also be part of a high school student’s curriculum, a different content filter configuration is activated based on the student’s grade-level band–– elementary, middle, or high school–– the moment a student signs into a district Chromebook.
- Younger learners have the most restrictive filters: With these new settings, much more content is being blocked when younger students conduct searches and open webpages.
- YouTube and image files: These Chromebook filtering levels also apply to YouTube searches and videos, as well as still images.
How to report inappropriate content
DoT acknowledges that, with the amount of new content being posted daily, no content filter will be perfect. If you our your student encounters inappropriate or age-inappropriate content, or if content is being blocked that does not need to be, please let us know through the following channels, so we can address it:
- Staff should contact the help desk: help.sfusd.edu or help@sfusd.edu
- Students and families should reach out to the Student Family School Resource Link:
- Via web browser: familylink.sfusd.edu
- Via email: sflink@sfusd.edu
If you can, please provide a specific URL (web address) for the content that was encountered.
Thank you for your collaboration!
