State & Federal

Access and Equity focus on closing the opportunity gap for SFUSD’s African Americans, American Indians, LatinX, Pacific Islanders, and other marginalized students.  Through collaborative action with students, families, community partners, and SFUSD staff, we provide specific support so all students graduate ready for college, career, and 21st-century life.

Citywide Tutorial Program (CTP) is one of the Access & Equity supplemental programs in the State & Federal Division in the Curriculum & Instruction Department.

SFUSD Citywide Tutorial Program for African American Students

Citywide Tutorial Program engages with educators, families, and the community to provide academic tutoring to African American students in SFUSD.

Habari Gani!, the Swahili saying from the Nguzo Saba (The Seven Principals) to organize around Kujichagulia (Self-Determination) and Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility) (two principles of the Nguzo Saba).  These African American and pan-African sayings celebrate family, community, and culture during the Kwanzaa holiday and throughout the year.  This is to organize the goals and responsibilities for Citywide Tutorial Program.

This school year, the creation of academic services for CTP included private tutoring sessions, a paid high school internship, and advanced math and reading techniques.  This email is to provide an update on this shared effort and obligations.

The upcoming school year will take more families, educators, and communities to address scholar identity, groundedness, appropriate leadership, shared effort, and responsibility.  These adjectives are taken directly from the Adinkra symbols representing Kujichagulia and Ujima.

Kujichagulia
Ujima

To define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves, and speak for ourselves.

To build and maintain our community together and make our brothers and sister’s problems our problems and solve them together.

Akoma ntoaso

“The Adinkra symbol of shared effort and obligation.”

To implement these ideas, the plan for the 2023-2024 school year is to begin enrollment for students to receive tutors by the end of August, use new and existing SFUSD high school employees, and identify a complete wraparound support system for students needing to schedule time with tutors who are specialized to give techniques for advanced subject areas.
