Social Emotional Learning
Strong, supportive and sustained relationships with peers and adults are the foundation of all learning at Sunset. Social and emotional competencies including self management, growth mindset, self efficacy and social awareness are taught explicitly with evidence based curricula, integrated into all academic activities, and celebrated across settings.
The result is a caring community where all students and adults learn to use clues to notice how others are feeling, and compassionately put that empathy into action.
Some of the programs we use to teach social and emotional skills and build relationships are:
Social and Emotional Learning: Students discover and practice empathy, self regulation, problem solving and executive functioning through games, interactive videos, discussion, home links and more.
Bullying Prevention: By teaching all community members the three R’s of Recognizing, Refusing and Reporting bullying, we empower bystanders and prevent bullying.
Restorative Practices are based on principles and processes that emphasize the importance of positive relationships as central to building community and restoring relationships when harm has occurred. They are a disciplinary paradigm shift in which the process of repairing harm and resolving conflict is done with students, instead of to them.
Treehouse Tribe teaches students skills to have empathy across differences of ability, and to build meaningful friendships with Sunset students who have autism. This program is new to Sunset this year!
