Negotiations Information for District Staff

Introduction

SFUSD and UESF have been engaged in negotiations since March 2025. While SFUSD deeply values its educators, the district is also grappling with a dire fiscal reality. After months of bargaining and a fact-finding report, SFUSD and UESF have not reached an agreement. UESF has declared their intent to strike starting Monday, Feb. 9.

Staff Reporting

Dear SFUSD Employees:

Purpose

On February 3, 2026, the Board of Education approved emergency authorization for the Superintendent to enact measures to ensure student safety, provide continued learning opportunities for students, and protect district property in the event of a strike. This includes the ability to make changes to school operations, reassign and deploy staff, and reallocate resources to meet this need.

At this time, schools are closed to students for instruction on Monday, February 9, 2026. SFUSD staff will be redeployed. Additional guidance on staff redeployment will be provided via email. Please prepare to take home with you today any items you will need for your job functions on Monday.

The purpose of this message is to provide staff with information about the timekeeping and attendance expectations in the event of a strike.

Reporting Expectations

Employees are expected to report daily to their designated work site in person per their contractual agreements. Current work hours are in effect. Exception-based work time reporting continues to be in effect. New vacation requests are suspended until further notice as of February 5, 2026.

Timekeeping Requirements

Staff are still required to enter all absences to Red Rover. A new dropdown has been added into the system for absences related to unpaid labor actions. All employees engaging in union-related work stoppage will be required to report that absence as such. All sick time entered into the system will require a doctor’s note, even for one day. Additionally, in the event of school closures, employees will be required to check in in person with a designated administrator.

Work Locations

If the Superintendent deems it necessary to make changes to school operations, including potential school closures or work site changes, guidance and essential information will be provided to all staff and families through the SFUSD website (sfusd.edu), auto dial, text message, and email. Please confirm that your contact information is up-to-date in Frontline.  Eligible staff will receive updates via email, text, or autodialers about redeployment plans and/or any changes to their work location by Sunday, February 8, 2026.

Use of District Equipment

As a reminder to all SFUSD employees, Board Policies strictly prohibit the use of District equipment or property to disseminate unauthorized political messages, especially during business hours. While the Governing Board respects the right of school employees to engage in political discussions and activities, employees must do so on their own time and at their own expense.  (BP 4019.25.)  Additionally, employees shall not solicit students or their families to further the employees’ personal financial gain, ideological persuasions, or to promote any organization not directly under the control of school authorities.  (AR 1321.)

Stay Informed

The district will be in communication with all staff as things unfold. Please continue to refer to your SFUSD email and the district website for updates.

Sincerely,

Swen Ervin

Senior Executive Director of Human Resources
