Letter regarding Former Student Incident

Dear Parents and Caregivers: 

I am sorry to inform you that a recent graduate of our school, Jayda Maybrey, died last Friday.

Death can be difficult for us to understand, especially when it is sudden. We may feel a variety of emotions: shock, sadness, or confusion. What is most important is that we care for and support each other. 

The Coordinated Care Team at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Academic Middle School has made plans to respond to the emotional needs of impacted students and staff Teachers and support staff will notify students during advisory classes on Monday, February 2nd. We will provide supportive spaces and have additional Wellness support staff on site. Staff members will be available to provide support as needed. 

If your family has experienced a death or similar loss recently, the news of a death affecting our students may bring up feelings about that death. While this may be a normal experience, we want to provide assistance if needed. Please let your child’s counselor know if there is any additional information the school should be aware of so we can provide the support your child needs. 

This difficult time can be stressful and confusing. A sudden death may be disturbing to you as well as to your child. It is for this reason that we especially want you to know of our care and support.

Estimados padres y tutores:

Lamento informarles que Jayda Maybrey, una recién graduada de nuestra escuela, falleció el viernes pasado.

La muerte puede ser difícil de comprender, especialmente cuando es repentina. Podemos sentir diversas emociones: conmoción, tristeza o confusión. Lo más importante es que nos cuidemos y apoyemos mutuamente.

El Equipo de Atención Coordinada de la Escuela Secundaria Académica Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. ha elaborado planes para responder a las necesidades emocionales de los estudiantes y el personal afectados. Los maestros y el personal de apoyo notificarán a los estudiantes durante las clases de asesoramiento el lunes 2 de febrero. Proporcionaremos espacios de apoyo y contaremos con personal adicional de apoyo de bienestar en las instalaciones. El personal estará disponible para brindar apoyo según sea necesario.

Si su familia ha sufrido recientemente una muerte o una pérdida similar, la noticia de un fallecimiento que afecte a nuestros estudiantes puede despertar sentimientos sobre esa muerte. Si bien esto puede ser una experiencia normal, queremos brindar asistencia si es necesario. Por favor, informe al consejero de su hijo/a si hay alguna información adicional que la escuela deba conocer para que podamos brindarle el apoyo que necesita.

Estos momentos difíciles pueden ser estresantes y confusos. Una muerte repentina puede ser perturbadora tanto para usted como para su hijo/a. Por esta razón, queremos que sepa que cuenta con nuestro apoyo y atención.
