Letter to MLK Families regarding Field Trip Medical Emergency

Dear MLK Families:

I am writing to inform you of a serious incident that occurred during yesterday’s 8th grade field trip to UC Davis. During the trip, it became known that some students had ingested cannabis edibles earlier in the day. As a result, one student became ill and required hospitalization. We are monitoring their condition and keeping the student’s well-being at the center of our concern. All families of the students directly involved have been contacted.

We strongly encourage any students or families who believe their child may have ingested edibles to come forward and speak with a trusted adult at school. Our focus is on student health, safety, and education—not punishment. Our goal is to ensure all students get the support they need.

As a school community, the health and safety of our students is our top priority. We ask for your partnership in speaking with your child about the dangers of ingesting unknown substances and making safe, informed choices. If your child has concerns, questions, or needs someone to talk to, our school counselors and support staff are here to help.

We also want to take this opportunity to remind our students and families about the importance of respecting one another’s privacy. While it's natural to be curious or concerned, it is essential to allow those involved space to process the incident without feeling overwhelmed by attention or speculation.

Estimadas Familias de MLK:

Les escribo para informarles de un grave incidente ocurrido ayer durante una excursión de estudiantes del Octavo Grado a la Universidad de California en Davis. Durante la excursión, se supo que algunos estudiantes habían ingerido comestibles de cannabis ese mismo día. Como resultado, un estudiante se enfermó y requirió hospitalización. Estamos monitoreando su estado y priorizando su bienestar. Hemos contactado a todas las familias de los estudiantes directamente involucrados.

Recomendamos encarecidamente a cualquier estudiante o familia que crea que su hijo/a pudo haber ingerido comestibles que se presente y hable con un miembro del Personal Docente de confianza en la escuela. Nos centramos en la salud, seguridad y educación de los estudiantes, no en el castigo. Nuestro objetivo es garantizar que todos los estudiantes reciban el apoyo necesario.

Como Comunidad Escolar, la salud y seguridad de nuestros estudiantes son nuestra principal prioridad. Pedimos su colaboración para hablar con su hijo/a sobre los peligros de ingerir sustancias desconocidas y para que puedan tomar decisiones acertadas e informadas. Si su hijo/a tiene inquietudes, preguntas o necesita hablar con alguien, nuestros Consejeros Escolares y Personal de Apoyo Estudiantil están a dispocision para ayudarles. También queremos aprovechar esta oportunidad para recordarles a nuestros estudiantes y familias la importancia de respetar la privacidad mutua. Si bien es natural sentir curiosidad o preocupación, es fundamental brindarles a los involucrados el espacio adecuado para poder procesar tal incidente sin sentirse abrumados por la atención o las especulaciones.
