MLK Staff Letter to Families regarding Potential Cuts to MLK MS

Dear MLK Families,

The Staff at MLK MS would like to bring up a concern to all our families and students at MLK MS regarding the upcoming Proposed School Staffing Model from the San Francisco Unified School District for the 2026-27 school year affecting ALL SCHOOLS. The information can be found on the San Francisco Board of Education Agenda for the December 16, 2025 Regular Meeting. 

Specifically, the Staffing Model proposes the following reductions to our school site: 

• Change the school day from a 7 Period Day to a 6 Period Day. This will reduce all students’ electives from 2 elective classes to 1 elective class. Students that are taking English Language Development (ELD) will not be able to take any elective classes. Potentially 2 elective teachers will be eliminated.
• Middle Schools with less than 800 students will not receive funding for an Assistant Principal
• Schools with less than 600 students will be only funded 1 Clerk.(instead of the two we have now) 
• Schools will be funded with one Counselor per 500 students. (instead of the current 2 we have now)
• 50% cut to T-10 Security Staff. Potentially 2 Security Staff eliminated. 
• Additionally, due to funding constraints, potentially Family Liaison and Student Advisor will be eliminated. 
• Funding for Wellness Initiative and Community Health Outreach Worker will be ending at the end of this school year.

The Staff at MLK MS are extremely concerned about the effect these reductions will have on our school site. We ask families that if you too are concerned about these cuts, please let your voice be heard and attend the San Francisco Board of Education Regular Meeting on December 16, 2025 at 6:30PM. You can attend this meeting In-Person or online via Zoom. If you cannot attend this meeting, you can also submit your public comment to the Board of Education by emailing your thoughts to boardoffice@sfusd.edu .

Additionally, we encourage families to attend the upcoming School Site Council meetings in January 2026 at MLK MS, to further discuss and know about the changes. The School District plans to release budgets to schools in the beginning of January. Meeting dates below: 

• January 15, 2026 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM School Site Summit Meeting In Person at MLK MS
• January 22, 2026 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM Principal’s Coffee Chat
• January 29, 2026 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM Online Zoom

Once again, we are extremely concerned about the potentially 9 staff reductions to MLK MS. Please let your voice be heard by attending Board meetings and meetings at MLK MS.

Estimadas familias de MLK:

El personal de la Escuela Secundaria MLK desea plantear una inquietud a todas nuestras familias y estudiantes en relación con el próximo Modelo de Dotación de Personal Escolar Propuesto por el Distrito Escolar Unificado de San Francisco para el año escolar 2026-27 que afecta a TODAS LAS ESCUELAS. La información se encuentra en la Agenda de la Junta de Educación de San Francisco para la Reunión Ordinaria del 16 de diciembre de 2025.

En concreto, el Modelo de Dotación de Personal propone las siguientes reducciones en nuestro plantel escolar:

• Cambiar la jornada escolar de 7 periodos a 6 periodos. Esto reducirá las asignaturas optativas de todos los estudiantes de 2 a 1. Los estudiantes que cursan Desarrollo del Idioma Inglés (ELD) no podrán cursar ninguna asignatura optativa. Posiblemente se eliminarán 2 profesores optativos. Las escuelas secundarias con menos de 800 estudiantes no recibirán fondos para un subdirector.

• Las escuelas con menos de 600 estudiantes solo recibirán fondos para un auxiliar administrativo (en lugar de los dos actuales).

• Las escuelas recibirán fondos para un consejero por cada 500 estudiantes (en lugar de los dos actuales).

• Se reducirá el 50 % el personal de seguridad de T-10. Posiblemente se eliminarán dos empleados de seguridad.

• Además, debido a las limitaciones de fondos, es posible que se eliminen los puestos de enlace familiar y asesor estudiantil.

• Los fondos para la Iniciativa de Bienestar y el Trabajador de Extensión de Salud Comunitaria finalizarán al final de este año escolar.

El personal de la Escuela Secundaria MLK está sumamente preocupado por el efecto que estas reducciones tendrán en nuestro plantel escolar. Les pedimos a las familias que, si también están preocupadas por estos recortes, se hagan oír y asistan a la Reunión Ordinaria de la Junta de Educación de San Francisco el 16 de diciembre de 2025 a las 6:30 PM. Pueden asistir a esta reunión presencialmente o en línea a través de Zoom. Si no puede asistir a esta reunión, también puede enviar sus comentarios públicos a la Junta de Educación enviando sus ideas por correo electrónico a boardoffice@sfusd.edu.

Además, animamos a las familias a asistir a las próximas reuniones del Consejo Escolar en enero de 2026 en la Escuela Secundaria MLK para debatir y conocer los cambios. El Distrito Escolar planea entregar los presupuestos a las escuelas a principios de enero. Fechas de las reuniones:
