What's In Your Bag, Jag?

  • Use your Binder Reminder or a planner to keep track of your daily tasks and assignments. 
  • Remember to bring your books and materials to class! Backpack check the night before school!
  • Ask for help and get to know your teachers! Stop by at lunch or after school to ask questions.
  • Talk to your counselor if you are having any issues with school!
  • Be on time for school and classes!
  • Keep your lockers clean!

Studying vs. Homework

  • Understand the difference between Studying v.s. Homework - it is not the same!
  • Develop good study habits by:
  • Establish a good study area with plenty of light and a comfortable chair
  • Go to your closest neighborhood library for quiet space
  • Limit distractions – unnecessary internet usage, cell phone, TV and music
  • Look over class notes, study guides, homework on a daily basis to review what you've learned.

  • Students were given planners called Binder Reminders during the beginning of the year. You can write down homework assignments, test/quizzes, and keep track of important dates/activities!

Tutoring in the Bayview

100% College Prep Institute

100% College Prep Institute is an afterschool program in the Bayview neighborhood that provides tutoring, college advising and preparation services, and study and leadership skills. They also host youth clubs such as in math, languages, life skills, and more. The center hosts Summer College Prep Institute that offers workshops on preparing for the college application and financial aid process.

The Bayview Beacon Center, a program of the Bayview YMCA, is located at Phillip & Sala Burton High School. They are implementing the community schools model to ensure that every student graduates college-ready. The Beacon gives youth the tools to thrive, while also strengthening the legs that support them: parents, family and community. All Beacon programs and services are free and are open to everyone — especially students, parents, and residents of Bayview Hunters Point, the Portola District, and Visitacion Valley.

The center offers a gamut of programs for children, youth, and families in the areas of education, career development, leadership, health, arts, and recreation. Afterschool programs are augmented by employment and family services, as well as case management, structured recreational activities, and nutrition classes. 

Bayview Hunters Point YMCA

The Bayview Y's Afterschool Education Program  provides constructive activities and much-needed affordable child care during the times that youth are at the greatest risk (when they are out of school). Staff works with parents to address issues and monitor academic performance. Hours during the school year are Mon–Fri 2pm–6pm. Activities include: homework help, sports clinics, physical activities, literacy and math projects, cooking, daily snacks, games, CIVICS engagement program, and more. Transportation from school available.

The Willie Brown Youth Center program is designed to provide case management, academic assistance, specialized technological learning, and enrichment activities. They provide a safe environment and motivation for participating youth to be successful in school and life, as well as empower and engage participants to build self esteem.

College Track

  • Restricted Enrollment
  • Application and interview required. Students must attend 1–2 days a week. Enrolled on a first come, first served basis.

College Track is an afterschool college preparatory program that helps students from under-resourced communities graduate from high school and succeed in college. College Track sets high expectations for student achievement and offers a variety of programs in four core service areas: Academic Affairs, Student Life, College Affairs, and College Success. These core program areas are designed to ensure that College Track graduates not only receive admission to college, but are fully prepared to succeed in that environment when they arrive.
