Dear SFUSD Community:

Over the past 18 months, my priority has been to stabilize the district. Together, we are being responsible with our finances and operations so that we can begin planning for a stronger future for our students.

We are now entering a more strategic phase of this work. The goal is to improve our student outcomes by making SFUSD stable and sustainable for the long term. I know we can become a district that truly reflects the aspirations of our diverse students and families.

Our first major focus in this next phase is overhauling our enrollment system, which is a pain point for many families. We must do better.

At the same time, we will maintain our commitment to strengthen our school across every neighborhood, while also investing in robust citywide programs.

This will be a thoughtful, multi-year process. We are taking the time to get it right. Our decisions will be grounded in data, we will listen carefully to the community, and develop a clear understanding of enrollment trends across our district. We also have to be honest about how quickly we can complete this work given our limited resources.

Our students are counting on us.

Next Steps

I plan to bring a new student assignment proposal to the Board of Education by April 2027 to be implemented for the 2028-29 school year. We are also exploring opportunities to expand some programs as early as the 2027-28 school year to better meet family demand. In the next 12 months, I will be hosting conversations across San Francisco to hear from students, families, staff, and our community partners.

School closures and mergers are not part of this phase. Those decisions would happen only after a separate community engagement process, which would start in the 2028-29 school year at the earliest.

My priority is to make informed decisions that center the needs of our students, and support our staff and families along the way.

I know we are ready for this. Thank you for your continued partnership, care, and commitment to our schools.

Sincerely,
Maria
