On Monday evening, the MLK Family Partnerships Team held a Community Meeting for parents to share with members of the MLK principal interview panel the qualities and attributes they would like to see in the principal selected in interviews later this spring. 

The following ideas were raised up through the conversation, parents want MLK's next principal to

• prioritize children's safety and wellness

• show respect, empathy and demonstrate emotional intelligence

• show open-mindedness, patience, and a growth mindset

• center student voice

• be accessible and communicate with parents in multiple ways

• support teachers 

• build trust and support teams

• be resourceful

Additionally, a concern was raised regarding African American family representation on the interview panel. As a community that centers the experience of African American children, we recognize this concern and are sharing this message specifically as outreach to our MLK African American and Black families to please let us know you are interested in holding this position on the interview panel - to be considered for this spot on the interview panel, please complete this form by the end of the day on Wednesday, April 29.

El lunes por la noche, el Equipo de Colaboración Familiar de MLK organizó una reunión comunitaria para que los padres compartieran con los miembros del panel de entrevistas para el puesto de director/a de la Escuela Secundaria MLK las cualidades y atributos que les gustaría ver en el/la director/a seleccionado/a en las entrevistas que se realizarán a finales de esta primavera.

Durante la conversación, surgieron las siguientes ideas: los padres desean que el/la próximo/a director/a de la Escuela Secundaria MLK:

• priorice la seguridad y el bienestar de los niños

• muestre respeto, empatía e inteligencia emocional

• sea de mente abierta, paciente y tenga una mentalidad de crecimiento

• dé prioridad a la voz del alumnado

• sea accesible y se comunique con los padres de diversas maneras

• apoye al profesorado

• fomente la confianza y apoye a los equipos

• sea ingenioso/a

Además, se expresó preocupación por la representación de familias afroamericanas en el panel de entrevistas. Como comunidad que prioriza la experiencia de los niños afroamericanos, reconocemos esta preocupación y compartimos este mensaje específicamente para que las familias afroamericanas y negras de la Escuela Secundaria MLK nos hagan saber si están interesadas en formar parte del panel de entrevistas. Para ser considerado/a para este puesto, complete este formulario antes del final del día del miércoles 29 de abril.

Greetings MLK Family,

We would like to share an update regarding leadership at MLK Middle School.  We want to express our gratitude to Interim Principal Gougoumis and Interim Assistant Principal for their leadership of MLK. 

What is an Interim Principal/Assistant Principal? 

In some circumstances, it is necessary for the Assistant Superintendent to fill a vacancy by appointment and without adhering to the standard selection process. For example, when a vacancy occurs during the summer months or near the beginning of school, it may be necessary to appoint an interim administrator without the participation of a Site Interview Committee. 

Interim Administrators may be eligible for our expedited path or participate in our standard hiring process. In the standard process they may apply for any open position at any school site and be interviewed. They are not guaranteed a position in their current role. In the expedited process they may be approved by their current supervisor and School Site Council to waive the site based interview and go directly to their district interview. 

Next Steps

The decision has been made to open the MLK principal position for our standard hiring process this spring. Interviews will be conducted by a panel composed of MLK staff, families and community members to ensure interest holders have a voice in this process. The MLK panel will recommend 2 finalist candidates to the Superintendent for final selection.

The Panel will consist of 4 school staff, 2 family members, and 1 community member. The 2 family members were selected in consultation with the School Site Council, and have been approved by the School Site Council. 

Additionally, the MLK Family Partnerships team will be holding a Community Meeting on Zoom on Monday April 27, 2026 at 6PM, for families to voice their input on what they would like to see in a leader at MLK MS. All families are invited to attend. (See Below)

後續步驟

我們決定在今年春季啟動馬丁路德金中學（MLK）校長職位的標準聘僱流程。面試將由一個小組進行，該小組由MLK學校教職員、學生家長和社區成員組成，以確保所有利益相關者都能參與其中。 MLK小組將向校監推薦兩位最終候選人，並由校監進行最終遴選。

小組由4名學校教職員、2名學生家長和1名社區成員組成。這2位學生家長是經學校校務委員會協商選出的，並已獲得校務委員會的批准。

此外，MLK家庭合作團隊將於2026年4月27日（星期一）下午6點在Zoom平台上舉行社區會議，邀請學生家長參與，讓家長們針對他們希望MLK中學的校長具備哪些特質，提出意見。歡迎所有家長參加。(見下文)

Estimada familia de MLK:

Nos gustaría compartir con ustedes las últimas novedades sobre la dirección de la Escuela Secundaria MLK. Queremos expresar nuestro agradecimiento al director interino Gougoumis y al subdirector interino por su labor al frente de MLK.

¿Qué es un director o subdirector interino?

En algunas circunstancias, es necesario que el subsuperintendente cubra una vacante mediante nombramiento y sin seguir el proceso de selección estándar. Por ejemplo, cuando se produce una vacante durante los meses de verano o cerca del inicio del curso escolar, puede ser necesario nombrar a un administrador interino sin la participación de un comité de entrevistas del centro.

Los administradores interinos pueden optar por nuestra vía acelerada o participar en nuestro proceso de contratación estándar. En el proceso estándar, pueden solicitar cualquier puesto vacante en cualquier centro escolar y ser entrevistados. No se les garantiza un puesto en su cargo actual. En el proceso acelerado, pueden ser aprobados por su supervisor actual y el Consejo Escolar del centro para eximirse de la entrevista en el centro y pasar directamente a la entrevista del distrito.

Próximos pasos

Se ha decidido abrir el puesto de director de MLK para nuestro proceso de contratación habitual esta primavera. Las entrevistas serán realizadas por un comité compuesto por personal de MLK, familias y miembros de la comunidad, con el fin de garantizar que las partes interesadas tengan voz en este proceso. El comité de MLK recomendará dos candidatos finalistas al superintendente para la selección definitiva.

El comité estará formado por cuatro miembros del personal del colegio, dos familiares y un miembro de la comunidad. Los dos miembros de las familias fueron seleccionados en consulta con el Consejo Escolar y han sido aprobados por este.

Además, el equipo de Colaboración con las Familias de MLK celebrará una reunión comunitaria por Zoom el lunes 27 de abril de 2026 a las 6:00 PM, para que las familias expresen sus opiniones sobre lo que les gustaría ver en un líder de la escuela secundaria MLK.
