Letters regarding Administration Changes to MLK Community

Dear Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Academic Middle School Community--

We know many of you have been eager for updates on school leadership following the announcement of Ms. Sberlo transitioning into the principal role. We are excited for her to step into this role. We also want to once again thank Mr. Gougoumis for his leadership, and wish him much success in the role of science supervisor for our Curriculum and Instruction division. We know he will continue to support SFUSD’s student success there! 

We are pleased to share that, after a thoughtful and inclusive search process, we have appointed Dr. Jeremy Cegers as the next interim assistant principal of MLK, pending board approval. Dr. Cegers brings a wealth of experience that will support our MLK community and was one recommended by our hiring committee through our admin search process. We thank them for their commitment and dedication to the process. 

Please find attached a letter from Dr. Jeremy Cegers introducing himself to the community. We are excited to welcome him and look forward to the leadership he and Ms. Sberlo will bring in service of MLK's students and families.

Dear Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Academic Middle School Community,

My name is Tamar Sberlo, and I am honored and thrilled to introduce myself as the incoming principal of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Academic Middle School, having served as a Peer Resources teacher and program coordinator for almost a decade, a year as a project-based learning coach, and most recently as the Assistant Principal.

As a product of SFUSD, an SFUSD parent, and a Portola neighbor, I have fallen more in love with our community with every passing year. Our students are strong-minded and curious, our families are engaged and resilient, and our amazing staff are dedicated and passionate. When I joined MLK in 2015, we had the highest number of referrals in the district. Since then, our school has become a pioneer for project based learning, proactive and restorative practices, youth voice and the community school model. I believe our reputation as a school is outdated; it is time to make a new name for ourselves as a shining example of what education can look like.

What you can expect from me as a leader is enthusiasm, dedication, collaboration, accountability, deep listening, openness to feedback, and an unwavering drive towards equity - which means academic excellence for EACH and EVERY student. I firmly believe that community issues can only be solved in community; collaborative decision making and distributive leadership is how we will make the changes we all want to see for our young people.

Our goal is to prepare students to face the challenges of high school and beyond. There is a lot of work to do. We have bold dreams for our students and families. And we will reach them, together.

Thank you for allowing me to be in community with all of you. I am so excited to get started.

Mi nombre es Tamar Sberlo, y es un honor y una gran felicidad presentarme ante ustedes como la próxima Directora de la Escuela Académica Intermedia Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., tras haber servido durante casi una década como maestra y coordinadora del programa *Peer Resources* (Recursos para compañeros estudiantiles), un año como Instructora de aprendizaje de Educación Integral basado en proyectos de grupo y, más recientemente, como Subdirectora.

Como egresada del SFUSD, madre de un estudiante del SFUSD y vecina del vecindario del distrito Portola, me he enamorado aún más de nuestra comunidad con cada año que pasa. Nuestros estudiantes son decididos y curiosos; nuestras familias son participativas y resilientes; y nuestro increíble personal docente es dedicado y apasionado. Cuando me incorporé a MLK en 2015, registramos el mayor número de remisiones disciplinarias de todo el distrito. Desde entonces, nuestra escuela se ha convertido en pionera en Educación Integral,  aprendizaje basado en proyectos de grupo, las prácticas proactivas y restaurativas, la promoción de la voz de los jóvenes y el modelo de Escuela Comunitaria. Creo que nuestra reputación como escuela ha quedado obsoleta; es hora de forjarnos un nuevo nombre y convertirnos en un ejemplo brillante de lo que la educación puede llegar a ser.

Lo que pueden esperar de mí como líder es entusiasmo, dedicación, colaboración, rendición de cuentas, escucha atenta, apertura a recibir retroalimentación y un impulso inquebrantable hacia la equidad, lo cual significa excelencia académica para TODOS y CADA UNO de los estudiantes. Creo firmemente que los problemas de la comunidad solo pueden resolverse dentro de la misma comunidad; la toma de decisiones colaborativa y el liderazgo distribuido son la vía para lograr los cambios que todos deseamos ver para nuestros jóvenes.

Dear MLK Middle School Community,

I am excited and honored to join Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Academic Middle School as the new Interim Assistant Principal. Throughout my career in education, I have served in a variety of roles, including teacher, instructional coach, assistant principal, principal, and superintendent. Each experience has reinforced my belief that strong relationships, high expectations, and a commitment to student success are the foundation of a thriving school community.

As I begin this new journey, I look forward to getting to know our students, staff, families, and community partners. My goal is to listen, learn, and work alongside you to support the incredible work already taking place at MLK. I believe every student deserves access to a high-quality education, meaningful opportunities, and adults who believe in their potential.

I am passionate about supporting student achievement, building positive school culture, and helping teachers and staff succeed in their work. Together, I am confident we can continue creating an environment where students are challenged, supported, and inspired to reach their goals.

Me siento muy feliz y honrado de unirme a la Escuela Intermedia Académica Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. como nuevo Subdirector Interino. A lo largo de mi trayectoria en la educación, he desempeñado diversas funciones, incluyendo maestro, asesor pedagógico, subdirector, director y superintendente. Cada experiencia ha reforzado mi convicción de que las relaciones sólidas, las altas expectativas y el compromiso con el éxito estudiantil son la base de una comunidad escolar próspera.

Al comenzar esta nueva etapa, espero conocer a nuestros estudiantes, personal, familias y socios comunitarios. Mi objetivo es escuchar, aprender y trabajar junto a ustedes para apoyar la increíble labor que ya se realiza en MLK. Creo que cada estudiante merece acceso a una educación de alta calidad, oportunidades significativas y adultos que crean en su potencial.
