Dear MLK Families:

As you may know, Algebra 1 in eighth grade is rolling out across SFUSD middle schools and K-8 schools in different ways for the 2024-25 school year. I’m writing to share an update regarding the math curriculum at our school for eighth graders next school year. 

At MLK, while we won’t be piloting an Algebra 1 prototype during the 2024-25 school year, eighth graders will have access to Algebra 1 in the following ways:

• Summer Algebra 1 Intensive will be offered in 2025 to eighth graders attending MLK  between their eighth and ninth grade years.  All students at MLK will have the option to apply to the program. More information will be available by the beginning of 2025.
• Online Algebra 1 Course will be offered during the 2024-25 school year to eighth graders. Students will have access to two online options for Algebra 1. More information will be provided by the beginning of the 2024-25 school year.

Pilot schools were selected based on the readiness of staffing and students. For example, some schools will be able to pilot Algebra 1 because there are students who have already met the designated proficiency criteria above and have adequate staffing to provide Algebra 1 instruction.

Estimadas familias de la escuela secundaria MLK:

Como sabrán, Álgebra 1 en octavo grado se implementará en las escuelas intermedias y en las escuelas K-8 del SFUSD de diferentes maneras para el año escolar 2024-25. Le escribo para compartir la actualización sobre el plan de estudios de matemáticas en nuestra escuela para estudiantes de octavo grado el próximo año escolar.

En MLK, si bien no pondremos a prueba un prototipo de Álgebra 1 durante el año escolar 2024-25, los estudiantes de octavo grado tendrán acceso a Álgebra 1 de las siguientes maneras:

• El curso intensivo de Álgebra 1 de verano se ofrecerá en 2025 a los estudiantes de octavo grado que asisten a MLK entre octavo y noveno grado. Todos los estudiantes de MLK tendrán la opción de postularse al curso Intensivo de Álgebra 1 de Esuela de Verano. SFUSD proporcionará más información a principios de 2025.

• El curso de Álgebra 1 en línea se ofrecerá durante el año escolar 2024-25 a estudiantes de octavo grado. Los estudiantes tendrán acceso a dos opciones en línea para Álgebra 1. Se proporcionará más información a principios del año escolar 2024-25.

Las escuelas piloto/prueba que impartirán la clase de Álgebra 1 se seleccionaron en función de la preparación del personal y de los estudiantes. Por ejemplo, algunas escuelas podrán poner a prueba Álgebra 1 porque hay estudiantes que ya han cumplido con los criterios de competencia designados anteriormente y cuentan con el personal adecuado para brindar instrucción de Álgebra 1.
