Announcement Description

Dear SFUSD Families:

I am pleased to let you know that SFUSD is on track to offer in-person learning options at a select number of schools for our youngest students (those in Phase 2A) starting on April 12, 2021. Additional students will be offered in-person options before the end of April.

In SFUSD, our goal has been and continues to be to provide more options and opportunities for our students to learn. We’ve been preparing to offer in-person instruction to those who want to return this school year. We will also continue to provide distance learning for the remainder of the school year that ends in June.

We are excited to share this progress and we also know that many students and families who want to return will not be able to at this time. I recognize that distance learning is not ideal for most students and many families have struggled with a full year of distance learning. We truly wish we could return to in-person learning for everyone.

For those who may have the option to return this spring, I want to let you know that we will not reopen any schools until we can implement all health and safety measures required by the SF Department of Public Health and agreed upon with our labor unions. To learn more about what this will look like for our students, watch this 90-second video about the health and safety protocols students will be asked to follow.

We will be sharing more detailed information in the coming weeks. Families with students in the Phase 2A group will have the option to update your preference during parent teacher conferences. Families with students in grades 3-5 and Phase 2B will receive a survey on Tuesday, March 9.  Please respond right away as we are eager to hear your preference to remain in distance learning or return to in person.

Thank you for all that you have done this past year to support your children. I hope you have a safe and restful weekend.

Sincerely,
Dr. Vincent Matthews
Superintendent of Schools
