Announcement Message

We are thrilled to share that California Meals For All will continue for the next school year!

This means that all SFUSD Students will have access to 1 free Breakfast and Lunch every school day! Supper is also available for all SFUSD students at certain school sites across the district, and this is free through Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) funding.

Here are a few things to know about Free School Meals in SFUSD:

Student Nutrition Services primarily operates an Offer vs. Serve model, see below for what that means.

For lunch, we offer 5 meal components (Grains, fruit, protein, veggies, and milk).

  • Students must take at least 3 of the 5 offered components; one of those 3 must be fruit or veggies. This helps encourage students to make nutritious choices for themselves.
  • Students can take all 5 meal components if they would like, but they can not take more than 1 lunch per day.
  • Note: Milk is always optional
  • We call meals that meet these requirements "Complete Meals", which are reimbursable.
  • If a student does not want to take an entrée but would like to take fruit or milk, they must still take at least 3 of the 5 components. This is allowed if a student takes Fruit, Veggies, and Milk altogether. Students can always place the food that they don't want on the share table.

For breakfast, we offer grains, fruit, protein, and milk.

  • Students must always take fruit as part of their complete breakfast.
  • Note: Milk is always optional
  • Only students are allowed to pick up their breakfast to encourage them to make nutritious choices to start their day.

Students, parents, and staff can find their school’s menu at sfusd.edu/menus.

SFUSD and CA Dept. of Education Policy: No student is denied a meal, a fruit and or vegetable required with every meal. Students will be offered nutritious meals to support their learning and development. We appreciate your partnership in talking to our new and transferring students who are yet to understand how the meal program works. Please talk with your student about how nutritious the school meals are and to encourage them eat at meal time!

If you are a Middle or High School with the Refresh Menu, please take a moment at the beginning of the school year to let incoming 6th and 9th graders know that your meal program is new to them and to give it a try!
