Science
The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) describe the key scientific ideas and practices that all students should learn by the time they graduate from high school. The NGSS detail performance expectations. The Science and Engineering Practices are a big focus of our science instruction, they describe behaviors that scientists and engineers engage in as they investigate and build models and theories about the natural world.
The district recently adopted a new science curriculum to meet the NGSS. The curriculum is called Amplify, and it is being rolled out over a three-year period. In 2018-2019, the physical sciences unit was introduced, followed by the earth sciences unit in 2019-2020. In 2020-2021, the life sciences unit will be rolled out. In the meantime, the school will continue to use the previous Foss curriculum for life sciences.
STEAM Committee
The McKinley parent community has an active STEAM committee that hosts at least one STEAM night per year. This event allows kids and their families to engage with fun projects and to get excited about science.
