New for SY 2026-27: Early Education School TK Feeder

SFUSD is implementing a new TK Feeder system Link to this section

Beginning with the 2026-27 school year, SFUSD is introducing a TK Feeder system to make TK access more consistent, and to create more predictability for all students who enroll in TK.

Families applying to TK for SY 2026-27 should be aware of the TK feeder details, because those details will impact students’ options for TK enrollment. However, if your student is already in TK during the 2025-26 school year, the new TK feeder system is not relevant to you.

How the TK Feeder system works

Part I: TK feeder patterns determine attendance area tiebreakers for SY 2026-27

In SFUSD, students get the attendance area (AA) tiebreaker when they apply to their attendance area elementary school; that tiebreaker gives them priority over applicants who live outside the attendance area. For example, if I live in the Alamo ES attendance area, I qualify for the AA tiebreaker when I apply to Alamo ES - TK - General Education.

If my attendance area elementary school does not have room for a TK classroom onsite (i.e. on the school campus), it will now have a TK feeder classroom located offsite (i.e. at a different location). I will qualify for the AA tiebreaker when I apply to the offsite TK associated with my attendance area elementary school, meaning I will get priority over other applicants who don’t live in my attendance area. Similarly, I can qualify for the Sibling tiebreaker when I apply to TK at the offsite program, if my sibling is already enrolled in the elementary school. Regardless of tiebreakers, admission to my attendance area school is never guaranteed; the student assignment system generates school assignments based on each applicant’s tiebreakers and random number.

Part II: TK enrollment in SY 2026-27 determines promotion to Kindergarten for SY 2027-28

In SFUSD, students who enroll in TK are automatically promoted to Kindergarten the next year, in their same school and program. For example, if I attend Alamo ES - TK - General Education, I will get promoted to Alamo ES - Kindergarten - General Education, unless I submit a new application with different choices.

As part of the TK feeder system, if I attend an offsite TK classroom, I will automatically be promoted to the feeder elementary school for Kindergarten. Promotion to Kindergarten will be based on TK enrollment alone, and does not depend on whether I live in the attendance area or qualify for any tiebreakers.

How to apply for TK Feeder pathways

How to apply to a TK feeder pathway

Visit sfusd.edu/apply to submit an online or paper application beginning October 17, 2025. Submit your Main Round application by the January 30, 2026 deadline.

When you apply for TK at an offsite program that is part of a TK feeder pattern, follow these instructions:

  • List the TK classroom location as the School you’re applying to
  • List the feeder elementary school as the Pathway

For example, Argonne Early Education School’s TK classroom is the feeder to Jefferson Elementary School.

  • Select “Argonne EES” as the School Selection I’m applying to
  • Select “Jefferson ES TK Feeder - General Education” as the Pathway
  • If I live in Jefferson’s attendance area, I will qualify for the AA tiebreaker
View of online application with Argonne EES as school, and Jefferson GE TK Feeder as Pathway

Each combination of School (TK site) and Pathway (feeder pathway to Kindergarten) is a distinct selection on your application. You can apply to multiple feeder pathways at the same TK school.
