When Someone Gets Sick

If your child has any of the following symptoms: Fever, chills, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, headache, nausea/vomiting, diarrhea, or experiences change in their ability to taste or smell in the past 10 days. Please contact the school to report, even if symptoms started on a non-school day. Your child must stay home for 10 days following the day symptoms started, unless the student has a doctor’s note.
Your child can return after 10 days of being symptom-free, no fever in the past 24 hours, and all other symptoms have improved.
  • Synchronous Distance Learning is not available if your child is home due to illness.
  • Your child will be provided Asynchronous Distance Learning work. 
If your child reports any of the following symptoms when being health screened at school entry: Fever, chills, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, headache, nausea/vomiting, diarrhea, or experiences change in their ability to taste or smell. Your school will contact you to pick up your child immediately. Your child must stay home for 10 days following the day symptoms started, unless the student has a doctor’s note.
Your child can return after 10 days of being symptom-free, no fever in the past 24 hours, and all other symptoms have improved.
  • Synchronous Distance Learning is not available if your child is home due to illness.
  • Your child will be provided Asynchronous Distance Learning work.
If a staff or student in your child’s classroom tests positive for COVID-19.

Your school will notify you that your child will need to quarantine.

If your child is at school, your school will contact you to pick up your child immediately.

Your child will need to quarantine at home for 14 days.


SF Department of Public Health may contact your family to provide support.

  • Synchronous Distance Learning may be available for your child via their teacher or a substitute.
  • If Synchronous Distance learning is not available, your child will be provided Asynchronous Distance Learning work.
If your child tests positive for COVID-19. 

Please notify your school immediately, even if you find out on a non-school day.

If your child is at school, contact the school to pick up your child immediately.

Your child must stay home on ISOLATION for 10 days following the day symptoms started OR after the date the test was taken.

If your family decides to end in-person learning and move into Distance Learning for the remainder of the year. You must inform your child’s principal at least one week prior to your child moving to Distance Learning.   
  • Your child will be provided Asynchronous Distance Learning work until the remote assignment is finalized.

Cleaning and Disinfecting

  • School staff will close off areas used by any person who tests positive as soon as possible. Site custodial staff will perform cleaning and disinfection of affected areas in accordance with CDC’s Cleaning and Disinfecting guidance, including opening windows to increase air circulation, disinfecting all surfaces, and cleaning all floors. 
  • If it has been more than 7 days since the person used the facility, additional cleaning and disinfection are not necessary.

Monitoring for Possible Outbreaks

SFUSD will monitor for an increase in confirmed cases of COVID-19. If an increase is detected, the district will alert the SF Department of Public Health to consult on whether your child’s classroom and/or school will close to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

COVID-19 Testing

  • Contact your healthcare provider: If you have insurance, you can get tested through your healthcare provider.
  • If you do not have health insurance, you can schedule a test at an SF Health Network site by calling 415-682-1740. Calls are answered 24 hours a day in most languages.
