CAC for Special Education

Community Advisory Committee for Special Education

Hello CAC Community,

Happy Black History Month! This year's national theme for Black History Month as set by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History is Black Resilience. We encourage you to celebrate Black excellence, determination and joy this month and all year long with your school site and in your community. For more information and resources, check out the SFUSD African American Parent Advisory Council (AAPAC)newsletter or scroll down for videos and articles celebrating Black History.

CAC members enjoyed gathering together at our January meeting and were honored to have Dr Mary Bacon present to families about the challenges families of color face when navigating special education. We heard from many parents and community members that they were grateful for the opportunity to hear Dr Bacon's thoughtful, inspiring and informative presentation. CAC members also participated in the CCEIS Summit an opportunity to dig deep into the data and learn about disproportionality and the importance of culturally responsive environments and curriculum for our students. Missed the meetings? Don't worry - you can get the info you missed on our website: and at

The purpose of the Community Advisory Committee (CAC) for Special Education is to champion effective special education programs and services and advise the Board of Education on priorities in the Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA).

The State Education Code mandates that each SELPA have a CAC and that a majority of CAC members are parents of students with disabilities.

Joining the CAC gives community members an opportunity to have their opinions heard and make a difference in the way special education is conducted in our area. Find out more on the CAC membership page.
